Premium: Testing Camera Gear in Norm’s Garage
I’m working from home today, so thought it’d be cool to share with you some new camera gear I just received for testing. Having just spent a day with it, here are my very early impressions and some thoughts on how I plan on testing it while at the South by Southwest conference next week. I also want to get you input about testing this camera, and would like to know what you want to see!

Video playback seems to be funky here. it’ll start playing after the video downloads fully, but then you can scrub. Try the direct download link if it’s not loading for you. I’m re-encoding in Handbrake and will reupload the files to see if it plays back better.
Thanks for that , looking forward to hearing what your final review on the A7 will be.
I had a look on borrowedlenses.com and I’d love to see you test out the Olympus OM-D E-M1. They don’t stock the main lens I’m interested in (12-40mm f/2.8) but if you could maybe check out the 17mm f/1.8 and the 60mm f/2.8 Macro that would be awesome.
The other one I’m interested in is the Fujifilm X-T1. In terms of lenses that have piqued my interest, I’d say the 10-24mm f/4, 23mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4 and 60mm f/2.4 Macro.
Downloading now. Looking forward to this one – even with my camera budget stretched to the moon and back!
Out of curiosity: Is it possible to have these as podcast feed or won’t that work with the premium accounts and authentication? I remember seeing something a while ago about podcasts that require login or some kind of basic authentication to make them work. Not sure how viable that is in this case but would love to know if I can just add these to an iTunes feed…
I’m selling all my Canon DSLR gear to move to mirrorless. I think the mirrorless market is much more exciting at the moment and am interested to see how it evolves.
Went to a company trip, I brought my OMD EM-1 which I just got and love, and my coworker brought the NEX 7-r, we swapped for a bit, that camera is amazing, but he was running almost all nikon glass w/ an adapter. The images look great. Not sure about the weight though, I love my new OMD coming from a 5dii/iii world it’s hard to believe the features and the weight.
yes, it’s the one app i want to test because it’s also on the nex-5r. right now i’m using my iphone for time-lapses, but exposure is all over the place.
I know it isn’t a particularly expensive or professional piece of gear, but I’d love to see/hear your thoughts on the Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens, for both photo and video purposes. Also the Lensbaby products. Both of these hold extreme interest for me because of their relatively low price and overall effect/image, but I’ve held off on getting one because I just haven’t seen anyone I trust get into the nitty-gritty aspects of day-to-day use.
Move as fast as you can and never look back! I moved from Canon to Fuji and have been loving it ever since. Any time I feel taht desire for full-frame shooting trying to pull me back I just pick up a friend’s 7d/5d and heavy L glass and any small regret I have disappears! Your kit is lighter which means less cumbersome, which means it can be with you more, which means more photo opportunities – and that can never be a bad thing…
Testing wise – As discussed with Stenchlord above, I feel the best attribute of these new high performance mirrorless cameras is great quality at a small size, so I’d be interested if you find yourself using this more than you would if you had your 6D with you. Good choice on the 35, I find it’s my favourite focal length for ‘everyday’ shooting.
Have fun at SXSW lads, I’m crazy jealous!
Yeah. Just need to sell off my current gear before I can drop the cash and I also need to test out both the XT-1 and EM-1 before deciding which to get.
I would love to see high speed shooting of action as one of the things you test with your camera and lens reviews. I know this is often one of the huge deciding factors of camera price. The faster they are generally the more you are required to pay. This also seems to be a area that is still lacking for in performance in the consumer mirrorless department. Focus speed and Accuracy also is something that I feel falls into this area for testing.
This actually coincides with my request pretty closely.
I’ve been thinking on getting a Sony A7 as my next DSLR, since my current camera is a bit too bulky for me and I’ve always liked the functionality Sony has put into these small cameras. I was doing a small fashion shoot with my couple years old Canon a week ago, and while it went great once I found the right balance of settings and shooting conditions, I really hoped for some improvements on some features.
The main things I found myself wanting in a camera when shooting in the less than ideal conditions I was in were: High sensitivity with little or no noise, fast autofocus, short trigger delay and a somewhat rapid burst mode, preferably with autofocus during a burst.
This led me to think if I should get the A7 instead of the A7r, since the A7 is supposed be better for rapid shooting.
Any chance you could test these features out? I’d like to see how these small full frames can handle shooting moving models in a moderately lit environment. Is the burst fast enough to catch micro-expressions? Is the autofocus able to track faster movements? And how dark can it get before you start having to balance between grain and motion blur?
Don’t know if you’ve tried it yet, but I am absolutely loving the Magic Lantern firmware on my Canon cameras. Especially the built in intervalometer and Raw video recording. http://www.magiclantern.fm/
Also, if you like timelapses, check out Enrique Pacheco, he’s a Sony sponsored pro. http://www.enriquepacheco.com/
For a moment there when you said “rent lenses” I thought you said that you were getting some Red lenses. I thought “holy cow, they got a heck of a budget all of a sudden!
