Premium: Weathering the T-800 Endoskeleton
We stopped by Adam’s Cave last year to catch him applying weathering effects to his new T-800 Terminator replica. While we shot video coverage of Adam working on this project, Adam explains this particular weathering process and how he makes the shiny endoskeleton look like it’s been through a gritty and grimy battlefield.

I love these one day build/model-making/weathering videos, they’re by far some of my favorite content on the site as something of a scale model and woodworking nerd. I can’t wait to see what the Secret Project from the latest Still Untitled is (my money is on the spacesuit/armor from Alien, unless Adam already has one of those and my memory has vanished entirely).
That said, I guess I get the be the obligatory guy that yells at you for not wearing a mask while airbrushing – that atomized particulate (especially when it comes lacquers) is super bad for you. I was also taught never to backflush an airbrush on account of paint working its way past the needle bearings into the air chambers and other mechanicals, but that’s hardly a worry unless you’re using some super-expensive airbrush and don’t clean it regularly.
The secret project has pretty much been found out, the photos that show the suspected item (which matches the sketch pretty closely) are in the comments over on the last Still Untitled. 🙂
The Alien Spacesuit does have some similar details, but it is unlikely he would finish that before the summer if he was still drawing diagrams in March. 🙂 He does have the helmet for it though, so my guess would be it is in the works too 🙂
Man, that’s what I get for only listening from my phone. I had completely forgotten the Rasputin Gauntlet, which I’m also looking way forward to seeing more of.
🙁 I can’t watch most of the premium videos on my iphone. Gutted.
Beautiful work Adam. It looks amazing. And as always, great to hear about your creative process as you work.
Can Premium vids please be in the same device-watchable format as the rest of the site?
The future is a dirty place for a robot.
Really enjoy videos like this. It nice to see something so cool and so fun
thanks for that. It’s a problem for most of the premium videos.
Is anyone else having the letterbox be full of a still from the video?
Adam appears to be very well armed as of late…
yeah, it’s a known bug and on our list of future fixes. sorry about that!
Looks good now, many thanks!
Great Vid. Artistry in motion.
Thanks for the response, and deciphering my poorly worded query
It always amazes me how a simple wash of color can bring something to life so quickly!
Awesome! More like this please 🙂
ps. The ability to pick a lower quality than 1080 would be bonus (Never thought I’d ask for worse quality 😉 But the internet connection to Thailand is often amazingly slow).
Nitpick, and as a complete contrast to the above point: I assume this was filmed with a dslr an manual focus? When the video was in focus it was really crisp but a lot of the time everything was a bit blurry. Something with auto focus or with a wider depth of field might have yielded a better result?
Cheers!
brilliant. Works now, thanks heaps!
Videos like this is what I really like as a premium member. Adam building etc. is fantastic! 🙂
This is what i use to do with all of my Gundam modals back in the day. I have never tried using oil paints though. I can definitely see the appeal.
Videos like this makes me glad I broke down and got the premium membership. I love to watch and learn the different techniques Adam uses to weather stuff. Hope to see many more in the future 🙂
Yes! More like this please, this is why I got premium 🙂
Loved it! Downloaded and watched a few times already. The speed at which Adam works is crazy (all that while explaining what he’s doing). Almost as if he’s used to working under pressure and within tight deadlines….. 😉
Absolutely love this video. It’s great to see the premium stuff flowing smoothly now. 🙂
I have to say, all of the one day builds, weathering, type videos have been incredibly inspirational. It’s made me go back and explore my arts n crafts side. Besides, drawing, crafting, making art is great while I’m waiting for all my sous vide food to get cooked. 😉
Good Stuff!!
Great video. Super interesting. But Norm, just a bit more practice behind the camera.
Awesome Video!! I love the build video’s with Adam.
I was thinking that, too. But it’s almost impossible to get a smooth video if it’s just one camera moving around. It’ll always be a little bit “Cloverfield” shaky out-of-focus cam. And I assume that having 2 or more cameras would add a lot more work in post.
Having said that, practice will make perfect 🙂
This is awesome! Thanks guys!
Works on Iphone now,. as I watched it yesterday 🙂
Awesome vid, enjoyed the “behind the scenes” and getting more than just the cut ins of the video that is for everyone.
Im thinking I want one,. Maybe try and 3d print one… Any idea on how to get a good chrome effect without vaccumetalization?
The first few minutes of this video are a direct called bluff to everyone who ever said, “Man, Adam is so awesome I could just watch him airbrush a thing in contemplative silence.” (Turns out that’s actually true. 🙂
That was freakin’ great! Loved every grimey minute of this video..
found footage in the next scene after the video ends the terminator killed them all
I opened this on a tab on my phone for later viewing. Last night its 11pm im in bed and I suddenly remembered this so I started watching. halfway thru my GF comes in the bedroom, looks at me and says “are you watching prop porn again?” before I could answer she hears Adams voice and says “You are! you men are SO predictable” and she left with a smile on her face.
