Premium: Assembling the Hellboy Mecha-Hand Motivator
Our 3D printing columnist (and Inventern winner!) Sean Charlesworth stops by the office to show us how to assemble one of his Motivators that he designed and built for Adam’s Hellboy Mecha-Hand project. We chat about 3D printing and the challenges of designing something this mechanically complex in 3D modeling software. To watch and follow along with the build, sign up for a Tested Premium Membership by clicking here.

Awesome. Ah, the perks of membership…..
Holy crap. I just noticed the R2D2 Haynes manual shirt….
Now *this* is Premium Membership content!! 😎👍
*A One of my all time favorite shirts by Reece Ward (I think). Mine is full of holes and I can’t find it in print any more. If anyone finds it, let me know.
It is excellent! I certainly hope it says, “Based on a complete teardown and rebuild.” somewhere on it.
Oddly enough, I find the official version lacks the same impact.
If you read through some of Adam’s post on the RPF he said that after he finished this prop he is moving on to the Schufftein Troll Viewers. I haven’t seen them anywhere in the shots of the shop, so maybe that’s next?
Awesome video, and great for premium members!
Thanks guys!
*A I agree. I grew up using Haynes manuals – they’re the best. My favorite part is the cutaway of the inside shows a Dalek, turntable, bicycle and a bunch of other funny stuff.
Am I out of my tree or is there footage of the original going like the clappers on a bench somewhere?
Is that small chain VEX Robotics chain? It looks a lot like it.
That would be amazing, I’d totally be interested in that. 🙂 It’s a great, diverse kit.
Awesome video. I love these latest premium videos, they are amazing! Out of curiosity, does anyone else in aus have trouble streaming them, or is it just my fail internet?
I will probably make some kits available via The RPF, especially since there is a long running glove thread that Adam was involved in. Need to work out some kinks first but I have a good idea of how to display it sans glove. Will keep everyone posted.
I believe Adam got the motor and chain from this robot site.
My first Premium video view. Very impressive work. Love this…
Yep, chug-a-lugging here in Tas.
Amazing content. It’s been one packed July. It’s like the second best parts of Octoberkast in bite sized segments doled out over an entire month. The best being being slapped by Veronica of course. 😉
Good job man, good job.
This looks like the manufacturer of the chain that Adam used:

without actually seeing the chain, I can’t tell for sure what the pitch is.
Don’t forget, there are a bunch of older premium content videos that are worth going back and watching..
release this as a kit!!! I’ll preorder!
Nice job Sean, next time you’re in the bay area lets have dinner.
This was a great video. I appreciate the time you took here to break down all of your hard work and the engineering that went into each piece. It’s a beautiful piece.
A great video! I really enjoyed it. Keep them coming!
