Tested Builds: LED Hypnocube, Part 4
Soldering steel wire proves to be more challenging than either Will or Norm anticipates, and both struggle not to stay off course or burn themselves with the soldering iron. Taking bets in the comments as to whether this build will success or fail, and whose mistake screws it up! Good cinematography, Joey. Love the blinking lights 😛
Keep chasing that whale, Norm! 🙂
Can you guys suggest some soldering learning kits for those of us who would like to learn that as a new skill?
Favorite moment occurs at 25:02
Norm (pulling fingers quickly away and making huffing sounds): Hot!
Will (matter-of-factly): “Did you burn yourself?
Norm: Nope!
Will (barely audible): Damn…
Also, props to for keeping it together (literally and figuratively) during the strand 6 crisis – at any moment I was expecting a cry of “Sweet merciful Jeebus” as one solder joint after another came apart. You sir, are one steely-eyed solder man!
Which “awesome helping hands” does Adam get off ebay?
I would check out Velleman kits. They have several different to choose from and ranging from simple to medium complexity.

I really love these build videos. This series has been interesting since it is clear you guys are using skills that are not in your wheelhouse. So keep them coming.
I would like to know as well. I ordered this kit without any experience but thats half the fun.
Am I the only one having audio problems on the download?
Flash-player freezes in fullscreen for me, but I have flash issues, so that’s probably on my end..
Liking Norm’s soldering skills by the way. Even worse than me, and I’m not great, but we’re can all watch you guys learn, and that’s great 🙂 . Really liking this one so far.
SOLDER…SOLDER LIKE THE WIND!
Yep, audio issues with the download here too
Yes I got the Lorde reference! 🙂 I looks like a really satisfying project!
Not sure if it would work but I suggest trying to pre-tin all the led-legs with a dab of solderand then holding the wire in place with one hand and the soldering iron in the other.
Evil Mad Scientist, have some cool kits. Colin from Adafruit made a decent video about soldering. But soldering the LEDs to steel is unusual. You want the a very high temperature on your solder iron can get (steel has to get hotter to bond with solder), and a flux that works on steel (you will probably need to clean it away afterwards).
Watching from another computer.
Just paused the video at “Your call is in ten minutes.” Twenty minutes left on video.
I spent a spring break in college doing surface soldering for a lab I worked in. There were 3 of us doing ~ 30 hours of soldering in that week. It was a constant competition of who burnt themselves first (spoiler: it was the guy with bad depth perception).
Also, “fuck fuck fuck”… “Premium Content!”
http://sparkfun.com has a lot of soldering kits for various levels. Some include an iron, some are just a pcb and bits. They also have some good tutorial articles: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/how-to-solder—through-hole-soldering
Good helping hands:

Anyone else having issues with the downloaded video? Player works fine, but when i download the video I get a skipping audio track.
Suggestion: When doing series, how about putting jump links to the other videos in the series with each episode?
That way the viewer doesn’t have to go back out to the “Videos” front page and find the next one – and since it’s for premium users maybe the “but we want to expose visitors to all the options as much as possible” isn’t of essence (if, indeed, it ever really is – that’s another story though).
Still want to see the helping hands Adam has…… keep hearing about them
Larsen Park was playground he was talking about… They are rebuilding it…
Just wanted to put in another mention for the audio being screwed up in the download. Please fix? It’s pretty unwatchable. I don’t have Flash installed, so I’m not watching this through the player.
