Tested Lessons: Basic Animatronics, Part 3

Today, the team finishes up the jaw movement on the mechanized skull, and starts figuring out a way to give it a two-axis movement around its neck. One problem: this skull doesn’t have a neck! There’s more problem-solving of servos placement and appreciation of epoxy. Follow along by signing up for a membership here!

  1. I feel like there was a time loss between episode 2 and 3??

**** AHA, it was addressed about a min into the video… man that was a rough start.

  2. Interesting overlay during the closeups!

I was about to say the same, but still wonder how it was produced. I mean : was it intentional or just a sneaky artsy reflect?

  3. I’m not sure if a skull needs a universal joint. It would be better served with just a pivot forward/back and a rotate.

  4. Commenting as I watch, so he may figure it out soon, but pretty sure the light isn’t working because its shorting. The wires look like they are all on the same line. And it is driving me crazy.

  5. I think there are a few builds on the RPF with the name and details for the exact skeleton from Geoff 🙂

  6. But doing that would still require basically the same amount of engineering and number of servos. Plus you would lose some of the directions/types of movement of the head (ie side to side).

  7. My internet is 50 mbps down and 10 up. How can I watch this in 1080? No download link and if feels like I rarely see it better than 480p streaming.

  8. hate to be a jerk but…. there is one safety issue i have to point out. Repeatedly in the videos i’ve watched on this website i see people holding things and drilling into them where a finger or portion of the hand is inline with the drill bit. I made that same mistake about twelve years ago. End result i got lucky and eventually regained use of that hand and nearly all the feeling as well. This mistake cost me about 5 g’s in hospital bills and nearly a year of being one handed.

Especially when drilling into plastics there is a tendency for the bit to almost tap the hole instead of clear it near the end and then continue to pull itself through the material. If a tasty fleshy bit happens to be nearby when this happens the drill and bit have no qualms about diet.

Granted some of the people seen in these videos are very experienced and less likely to make those kind of mistakes than average joe. Counterpoint I had been a full time carpenter and tinkerer for years when I made this mistake myself. The speed of drilling and size of bit typically seen in your video’s is slow/small which makes accidents of this kind less likely and less horrific when they happen but … i cannot explain in words the terror experienced as a craftsman when told there was a 50/50 on loosing a thumb and two fingers due to circulatory damage and having to wait weeks before being told if i got to keep my fingers or not.

  9. Awesome build and I think it will look great when it is done. I love how Frank is pretty much babysitting. Especially the section when Norm needs epoxy.

“so do we use this epoxy?”

“yes I already cut you some”

“do you think that will be enough?”

“..if its not enough we will just cut some more…”

hah! Love how you guys jump into these projects.
