Tested Lessons: Painting Model Kits, Part 2

In the second day of this week’s tutorial, effects artist Frank Ippolito teaches us how to plan out and design a paint scheme for a model kit before jumping in with brushes. We discuss the use of real-world references to find a pattern that is suitable for the next creature kit. Follow along with us by signing up for a Tested Premium Membership here!

  1. Andrew Koenig is Walter’s son who played the Joker on Batman: Dead End. Which was released in 2003.

  2. Some of Brian Froud’s books are also nice, The World of the Dark Crystal & The Goblins of Labyrinth

    And thanks for the painting lessons, this is great.

  3. Hm, the resolution of the video is very low. Is that for everyone or just me? No manual settings to change the resolution on the player. Only ‘auto’ is an option.

    I’d rather have a higher res and have it buffer for a while than watch a 240p video 🙁

    Can we get the resolution controls back or the direct download links like it used to be?

  4. here ya go, incase you want to do your own.

    i have an idea….submit your color scheme, and ill pick one to paint!

  5. I think that I shall never see

    A poem lovely as a tree.

    A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
    Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

    A tree that looks at God all day,
    And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

    A tree that may in summer wear
    A nest of robins in her hair;

    Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
    Who intimately lives with rain.

    Poems are made by fools like me,
    But only God can make a tree.

    Joyce Kilmer

  6. I hate the squeaking sound as well but you only get it with idiots that lean to hard on the pen.

  7. So last video was to let them just do what they wanted (hide the tips behind the pay wall maybe?)

    “This episode I’ll say back up and think about it” but then they are still left to do what they want without pointing stuff out as they go.

    Seemingly pointless as we’re now just watching 3 people paint each episode with very little to no guide.

  8. Just watched ‘Batman:Dead End’ and ‘Worlds Finest” on youtube, and have to say, even after the recent excellent renditions of these characters on the big screen, these two fan films hold up impressively. Even the grey cloth bat suit played well, where it always seemed campy and silly to me in the old Adam West days. The white contacts are a real winner, I can’t believe they never made it into one of the new films.

  9. I wanted to try and make a design, but for some reason (probably because I play too much Witcher 3) I couldn’t get past making an ogre version of Geralt of Rivia.

    With that out of the way I can start on a proper design…

  10. I went with a pale orc look. I messed up the eyes and couldn’t salvage them so I blackened them.

  11. With that Witcher stuff out of the way, here’s my entry:

    My daughter is way into killer whales and I thought it to be an excellent little project. There were two possible traps: the black could be too much and take out the details and secondly it could end up boring and monochrome.

    To counter that I added some yellow to the teeth and horns and some pink hues to the lip. I wanted ‘dead’ eyes but didn’t want them completely black either. From some reference photos I noticed a grey / blue edge which would bring out the otherwise glossy black eye from the rest.

  12. Made another one. This time I was thinking stone golem. I wanted it to kind of have a melted lava center so I gave him a cut, not too pleased of it though. I printed it in grey-scale and accentuated the details by adding more shadows.

  13. Norm, stick to the artist side, your colouring was perfect. Stay of the spraying though lol.
    Love what you guys, do just got premium. Well worth it.

  14. Late to the party, but a BRAND NEW Tested member, so I’ve got some catching up to do… love the informative painting videos and thanks to all involved!
