Tested Builds: Foam Propmaking, Part 5
We finish this week’s build by painting our foam weapons and adding some leather handles. They turned out wonderfully! Thanks to Bill Doran for coming by our office to give us this tutorial, and thanks to all of you for following along with the build. Hope you learned something! We’ll be back next month with another fun week of building, so stay tuned!

I think this would be a good way to make toy weapons for kids. What they have in stores is usually hard plastic and way to dangerous for play. The Nerf swords are ok but the flashing on the edges are a little too sharp in my opinion.
I love these weeks of build, but I wish that there could be some accompanying photos to go along with the video. You guys make such incredible projects, and it would be cool if there were a couple of close ups of the finished product.
I keep getting errors when trying to make comments and I can’t figure out why. Is there some kind of limit to the number of comments you can make? it just says “An error has occurred”
regardless. great videos! I enjoyed the builds.
What type of varnish is it? I’m in NZ so chemical name is more useful than brandnames or shops to buy it at. Great video, really inspiring
guy from that place Unluckily the website doesn’t list the ingredients. Strange since California is such a stickler for that. https://angelusdirect.com/products/satin-acrylic-finisher. Maybe the label does and Bill can chime in. The basic point is that it is usually sold at leather goods or leather dye and paint stores, so that it is very flexible as you would expect for something for leather. NZ must have some great leather goods stores and have something in that line
Bill is an excellent teacher, great videos.
That was brilliant. Bill is so informative and eloquent in his instruction. Maybes do helmet design for another build week.
Excellent work.
guy from that place Any varnish that’s used to protect art paintings. A local art supply store should have what you need.
Great Series
Any high-res photos of the finished products?
satin acrylic finish I can find. These are my first go, Raphael’s sai
Don’t worry about getting paint on your hands, Bill. Painting is like good barbecue. If you don’t get it all over yourself, you’re not doing it right.
Love this kind of project, guys!
This made me join. Just mad fun …
guy from that place Any Acrylic compatible varnish is acceptable, there are many to choose from. Art stores are the best place for them. Here even some walmart stores stock them so I’m sure any art store you go to will have them. Wherever you buy your acrylic paint should have it.
i came to say the same thing, give us some glamour shots!
Really great video series. It’s awesome to see a foam build from start to finish, and there’s a lot of good information to gather. I’m looking forward to starting my own project sometime. Thanks for the videos!
great video series, what is the durability of the finished products ? OK for kids play I.E Try and destroy?
Tried to follow the workflow and also take inspiration from some other punished props youtube videos. My First Foam Prop: a small axe 🙂
