Tested in the High Arctic, Day 12

Nearing the end of our trip, we were given access to the lower decks and working areas of the ship. Today, the chief engineer of the Kaptian Khlebnikov gives us a tour of the engineering and engine rooms, showing us how the 24,000 horsepower icebreaker is powered. It’s incredible!

  1. Lots of similarities to various behind-the-scenes parts of particle accelerators that I’ve seen in my time. You know, except for the diesel.

  2. Man, I really love the depth you guys are going into this journey- It’s a great amount of insight into that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

That being said, When are we going to get some more sweet, sweet build videos from Adam, Frank and Charles? That Sponsored Build Video from Adam yesterday is making me itchy.

  3. what’s completely astounding is how much we are accustomed to the general language of form we get to see here through fictional media. as norm said, much of the experience reads enterprise-y, but how many of those corridors and broken-up, interconnected, partly multi-tiered rooms have we seen in video games? how many of those doors read as loading barriers between different parts of the level? how many control centres have we seen in tv, film, and games that use these room-height consoles with different assortments of switches and readouts?

i noticed this earlier when norm gave us the small tour of the ship’s quarters, and the staircases were so eerily close to the mgs2 tanker level’s. but this really drives it home. it’s like watching escape from new york and seeing the decades of video games that riff it, except that this is reality looking completely like what we read as the aesthetic building blocks of fictional environments.

  4. Thank you ! And fantastic job capturing the tour, Joey, amazing place to visit. Do all the passengers get the tour, or was this a special request ? I’m getting more envious with each day’s revelations.

  5. Now those are DIODES. This film reminds me of when I worked in a coal power plant in New Mexico, but much cleaner. Fantastic. Safety first!

  6. Mighty damn interesting! I would never have thought they’d do this while underway. Too dangerous. But, hey, what do I know?

Now imagine that the crew has to be ready to run through this place when filled with smoke, fire or tilted 20 degrees and know where everything is…

One DOES love one’s hydraulic ram actuated water-tight doors. Ready to get closed no matter what’s in the way…

  7. Another month without premium content.. *sigh*

    Exactly. This is really poor.

+1 Its just really sad, this is not what i signed up for 🙁
