Let’s Build: Laser Cut Mechanical Kits, Part 2
With fingers bandaged and splinters removed, Norm, Simone, and Jeremy move on to a new laser cut plywood kit from Ugears. The more advanced model features mechanical movements and precision toothpick placement, which gives the team some trouble!

I was thinking during the earlier Let’s Build that I would have lubricated the wheels of the lock with a candle so they would turn freely. My father always carried an old candle in his toolbox for making wood screws easier to sink. I do the same nowadays. 2 minutes into this vid I had to laugh at everyone’s reaction to the instructions to “wax the part with a candle!?!”
I watched the padlock build and went out and ordered the timer yesterday – it is a timer as in how long it will run the mechanics within the machine (it is a silent music box). I went to the ugear web site and read the instructions yesterday so I knew that cracking open the box at the start of the video and jumping right in was not going to work. Based on today’s build, I plan to make some changes to my build.
1) mise-en-place.
2) before assembling, prepping each hole with a waxed toothpick/wire (2mm) before assembling the parts. Running the toothpick through the holes of several parts at the same time puts way too much stress on the toothpick.
3) the instructions suggest that you also wax the gears but I am wondering if sanding them is a better option.
The timer is a much harder build than the padlock. Looking forward to their successfull completion tomorrow.
If a tree falls in the forest, I’m gonna punch somebody.
Huzzah (sometimes written hazzah; originally huzza, and in most modern varieties of English hurrah or hooray. Late 16th century: perhaps used originally as a sailor’s cry when hauling.
Saved you a click.
Does Simone need stitches ?
I was concerned by the smoke in the background of some of the close ups, but nobody said ‘do you smell burning?’ so it’s probably nothing. Actually, I wonder whether these builds would be worth watching if everything went quickly and smoothly from beginning to end. I guess we’ll never know. 🙂
just saying, if this doesn’t end up sampled to death for TIOAT outros, it’s going to be such a tragedy.
Same.
I was going to suggest a bar of soap instead of a candle, but lip balm works. (Chapstick is a brand, tut tut!)
Have you guys thought about having a series of video of watching paint dry or perhaps grass growing ?
I would like my last words to be, “I’m amazed that I managed to live to be 142 years old and still feel so great at the end…”
You need a overhead camera! Or atleas a camera mounted on a really tall tripod so the work on the table can be seen
Bar soap would be better substitute for a candle.
I like hearing the random “shop noises” in the background from time to time.
