Let’s Build: Papercraft with PhysicsGirl, Part 3

The build team turns their attention to the the Mercury Astronaut papercraft kit, which turns out to be much more challenging than the rock band they’ve been putting together all week. Our science chat turns to the topic of perpetual motion machines, and why some people believe they work (when they don’t!)

  1. CERN advice: ask everyone you interview if they enjoy the horsemeat & wine bar in the CERN Cafeteria.

I never worked there personally, I have some friend there though, and attended a very niche high-energy conference there once. Crashed a party in the control room celebrating some luminosity milestone. Definitely surreal to chug a beer while standing next to all the beam control panels.

  2. Simone: “Cold fusion…Cold fission? Have you talked about that”
Dianna: “Oh I figured it out!”

That sounded so much more impressive than figuring out what the paper suitcases were haha.

  3. It was great to have Dianna as a guest – definitely do more videos with her in the future if you can.

It seems to me a shitty perpetual motion machine would just go faster and faster, since the carefully-made ones slow down and stop (or never get going in the first place). You might need to cheat.

  4. love the CERN talk. I went last year with a group of fellow physics teachers and CMS was open so we got to see in the centre of it. Also the guide took us to CERN’s animal shelter, you should definitely film there!!! Taking some of my A level students (16-18 year olds) back this summer.
