Hi Adam, your “byte” circuit may be a more complex bit of circuitry. Check out this video where a very similar looking module is a debounce circuit for an input button: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOlI1_i2HwQ . I’m sure if you got in contact with Marc and the other guys over at the Computer History Museum, they could help you figure out what your module really is.

Wow, Adam’s back with a bang! Looking at that criss-cross wire memory; that’s what they used in the Apollo moon lander’s computer! CuriousMarc is in the process of trying to boot up an orginial unit, the memory is well documented there and it’s a gem of a watch-list; https://youtu.be/2KSahAoOLdU
Even better – those chips are made with a photographic process by projecting images of the circuitry. Using that process, today our chip factories, all of them put together, produce a bit more than three trillion switches (transistors) every second. For all of last year we created three trillion transistors every second of every day. Pretty amazing!
