I get where you are coming from, but you don’t have to have a display equal to the original source, to appreciate the difference.
Look at “The Dark Knight” blu-ray for an example. Most of the movie was shot in 35mm, while a few key action sequences were shot in IMAX. The whole thing is compressed down to 1080p for the disc. In my case, I was watching that on a 720p TV. Even squished down like that, the scenes filmed at IMAX resolution appear way more crisp and lifelike.
Besides that, many folks buying these kind of cameras have dreams of getting into film festivals, where sometimes (probably rarely) the projectors are high quality enough to run digital shorts at their full resolution.
