Hands-On with DJI’s Phantom 4 Quadcopter Drone

We go hands-on with DJI’s latest quadcopter, the Phantom 4! The newest Phantom drone improves on last year’s model with three big features: much longer battery life, active obstacle and subject tracking, and a high-speed sport mode. We chat with DJI about how these features work and then put the drone in the sky for a test flight!

  1. I just bought a phantom 3 pro and I’m very happy with it, even seeing the new 4, that visual follow system still has a few bugs to be worked out.

  2. DJI is being smart with this upgrade. Not quite the tech jump from the Phantom 2 to the Phantom 3, but the inclusion of 1st-Gen sense-and-avoid will mean a lot in the USA. Kudos to Tested for addressing that this not a 360-degree capability. Sense-and-avoid will definitely need to happen in 360 degrees on all axes in the next iteration. Looks like object tracking may require some software/firmware updates to establish true confidence with operators. I personally think a simple beacon (a la Air Dog) would be more reliable for object tracking for now. The fact that Norm was able to lose tracking by simply walking fast at an acute angle does not bode well for this new feature. Also not happy seeing DJI changing battery design/dimensions with every new model. Li-Po battery tech is evolving greatly, but allowing legacy compatibility would go a long way with current users. It also appears the camera and gimbal have been redesigned with hard landings in mind for better survivability. Overall, it looks like a solid effort from DJI to stay on the cutting edge.

  3. Indeed, a nice technology demonstration, but not something for which I would jump out and buy. The tracking is just too limited for anything else but casual shots.

  4. I will get one and i am not sure which to pick!
Phantom 3 pro or phantom 4??
I was about to order after watching the videos on dji but after watching yours i am not sure!!
Just because of the bugs on the tracking option but dont you think it will be fixed just by downlading updates?
I really like the flying time and the range of the remote so should i wait for the 4 to rode, by it now or get a 3 pro?
