Tested: HTC Vive Review

The consumer release of the HTC Vive is finally here! We’ve been testing the Vive Pre for a while and the final headset for about a week, playing VR games with tracked controllers in a roomscale setup. Jeremy and Norm discuss the setup process, ergonomics, comfort features, and launch content for Steam VR. Plus, we play through Valve’s first-party VR game, The Lab!

  1. This was an absolutely FANTASTIC video review. Finally!!! Seeing many demos – better than anything I had ever seen. Boy, you guys really gave me the taste for it. Now I want one!! It will be very difficult to hold on to my money and patiently wait for Oculus Rift to have its controllers out, and then more games for both Rift and Vive, so that we can have a definitive comparison.

I am convinced we’ll see a whole new world starting and evolving. This doesn’t feel like a fad at all.

    Keep ’em coming Tested!

  2. Very nice review indeed. You two make a good team. Wonder if there is a difference in brightness comparing Rift and Vive? Vive seems to be more adjustable concerning eye lens distance. Looks like I need both as each system will have desirable content.

  3. “nozzle on his head” I’m pretty sure the entire point is that it’s a, Drum roll please………. VALVE!! XD

  4. So setup C for a base seems to be to switch to wireless. I hoped it was for future use of 3 bases together 🙁

    Something like :

    base 1 = A

    base 2 = B

    base 3 = C

I hope HTC will provide an update in the future to have more than 2 bases running in order to widen your space (and that they will sell bases separately).

  5. I love that what interested Norm and Jeremy the most was the little dog. It seems that avatars like that add a lot of personality to the virtual spaces.

Also, did I hear a couple of hangout notifications on the video?

Can you play valve games on the oculus and/or viceversa?

  6. you can load some Steam VR content on the Rift (as long as it supports the latest oculus SDK), but you can’t run Oculus Home in the Vive.

  7. Thanks! So it seems, at least for the time being, that it’s a little like Xbox or PlayStation, the headset determines what games you can play.

  8. Yes, probably. Although much will be released for both. Steam VR is open to all, so I guess that will make the Vive corner gain faster momentum with additional manufacturer jumping on board. Also Mac/PC/linux will be supported by SteamVR. Even now I only buy games on Steam and not from the Oculus shop. With all the delays in shipping that may well extend for months anyone has time to sit back and evaluate the options and developments. Maybe you get a chance to play with a lucky friend or in a maker space that has one near you.
