Hands-On with VR OmniDirectional Treadmill!
We step onto the Infinadeck, the omnidirectional treadmill seen in the movie Ready Player One. This treadmill lets you walk freely in virtual reality, in any direction. We learn about how it works and give our impressions on the state of the technology today. Thoughts on the Omnideck as a VR treadmill?
It looks like it’s a large circle with a bunch of rollers that are constantly trying to put the player back in the center.

If they really wanna test that treadmill.. Get some bboy and bgirl dancers on it. If they could solve those moves ..everything else would be cake butter
Hopefully this can be followed during its development. The basic idea is great and can be used in many fields. Their implementation looks good. I would like to see an endurance test.
I was standing up and watching this on my phone when they were at the 11:00 mark and the treadmill lines shifting nearly made me fall over.
What I want to know is, how did Wade get the treadmill into his van?
The walking (Norm and Jeremy) looked like their strides were being restricted due to the space available.
that’s interesting. you’re going to run out of space if you walk too quickly, and it looks like their system doesn’t adjust speed based on player movement. they also have to be rolling pretty slowly to not throw off your gait if the rollers are that small.
I know this is highly WIP, but one thing that bothers me that hasn’t been talked about, is how is the safety rail system used here not COMPLETELY in your way if not outright dangerous. There’s just no way you can swing your arms/controllers with that design and it’s hard to believe you’d ever feel truly secure.
Why wasn’t it built with some kind of a waist support system like the slidemills tend to implement. It seems like this would also help solve, or at least improve, the obvious problem of running out of platform while trying to accelerate your stride. There’s no reason such a system wouldn’t also be able to slide up/down to accommodate full hip-movement.
