Inside Adam Savage’s Cave: Gods of Egypt Stunt Weapons!
It’s like a late Christmas at Adam’s cave as he opens of box of props from the film Gods of Egypt–part of a large collection of costumes and props on auction later this month. These stunt weapons stand up to scrutiny up close, and show the production designer’s take on Egyptian mythology.

A complete SET! {rimshot}
Can anyone tell me what shirt/jacket Adam in wearing in this?
Adam mentions the jacket in his favourite things video for 2017.
It’s not actually the same jacket(front pockets, buttons etc), I thought it was at first too so I checked out the maker of that one and it doesn’t look like one of theirs. Thanks though!
Maybe of interest that on a recent special episode of BBC Antiques Roadshow here in the UK a (now retired) prop-painter from Elstree studios from back in the 1970-80’s had some great items which he had literally saved from going to the skip out back. The items included a Darth Vader helmet from A New Hope, a staff of Rah headpiece and the actual axe from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shinning; all 100% genuine and screen used props- quite something!
For Dr Who fans, also shown was the only known original script copy of the very first Dr Who with William Hartnell’s own annotations, was saved by a workmen (when WIlliam Hartnell was clearing-up before moving house) and passed down the family – onto the workmans grandson. Amazing how some things can survive through.
really like the khopesh is really looks well even close up. Would love to see it and the “hero” version side by side
The Shining axe? Seems pretty nuts that that at least the hero prop didn’t end up in Kubrick’s own archives, considering he kept just about anything related to his productions, including props that weren’t even used in the films.
Well, in the show the prop-painter explained that it was indeed the axe used in the infamous ‘The Shinning’ door chopping scene. After filming that sequence it was noticed the handle had split slightly and so it was replaced by an identical stunt axe for subsequent filming. The prop-painter had retrieved the screen used damaged axe before its final disposal.
FWIW Adam wears the same shirt/jacket thing in the Terry English armor making video series. I asked about it there, too. Hoping we can get an answer by repeating the question!
What do you think – waxed cotton? Ultrasuede? Actual leather?
Oh, I don’t doubt the story, just so crazy that Stanley let *that one* slip, probably lost him some sleep 🙂
Yeah, I’m even having a hard time really identifying the material. One moment Im convinced it’s waxed or otherwise coated cotton others a suade.
It’s cool though.
It’s a John Varvatos suede jacket that’s so lightweight it’s almost like a shirt! Got it at the sale rack at Bloomingdales here in SF a few months ago.
Thanks very much for filling us in!
