Artist Leo Villareal explains the technology that transformed San Francisco’s Bay Bridge into a spectacular light show. The light sculptor demos the algorithms that control and choreograph 25,000 LED lights affixed to the bridge using custom software. And how are the lights actually attached? Well, a 3D printer was involved.

Talk about high-profile work, haha. As a Bay Area maker, I can’t wait for you guys to go check out more projects at World Headquarters.
Nice challenge for hackers. Think of the entertaining possibilities.
neat piece. Good to see the art side and the engineering side.
I digress, I found some more info at: http://www.thebaylights.org
I can’t wait to see a giant penis scrolling across the bridge.
Damn. That’s pretty awesome.
Also, that guy sounds quite a lot like Brad Shoemaker every now and then… a Brad Shoemaker with a cold, I guess.
Right on. Also, the 3.5 million donation to this project could havae been better used in helping the hungry!
The cost for the night was 25 bucks. Beauty of LEDs is that most of the bulbs were under 4 watts.
I saw this last night. It was really great!
The project is funded with donations. Even if SF paid for this, it only costs $15 in electricity per night. http://thebaylights.org/funding
