Hi, Adam.
I spent thirty years making “industrial films,” and your discourse on the filmmaking “tinkertoy” set was a trip down memory lane. Thank you.
As far as I know, the “C-stand” is short for “Century stand,” from its original maker, Century Lighting in New York City. I don’t think Century is still around, but a couple of different companies make C-stands now, including Matthews and Lowell.
I really enjoy your videos on Tested. Many thanks.

Yup, century stand is what I was told in my brief stint in film school before moving onto other things. Although, the instructors did also admit the C-shaped legs was a common understanding as well. I suppose its one of those things that has a few origin stories.
C-stand: first thing that came to my mind was “clamp”.
