Tested Meets RoboSimian, NASA JPL’s Ape-Like Robot
NASA JPL’s RoboSimian stood out at the DARPA Robotics Challenge as one of the few non-humanoid robot designs. The use of four versatile limbs allows it to adapt to the test scenario in ways that would be difficult for a bipedal robot. We chat with Katie Byl of the UC Santa Barbara Robotics Lab, whose team programmed RoboSimian, to learn about the advantages of a quadruped design and how RoboSimian may be utilized in complex environments like being underground or even in space!

Very interesting design as mentioned. This robot has serious potential! Bipeds might be cool, but i get the impression most of them will tip over if you look at them the wrong way, hehe.
Yeah, if I was putting my money on a bot to survive in a difficult environment I would absolutely favor this over any bipedal.
This is the coolest robot I’ve seen in a while.

When watching some of the footage from the Darpa Challenge, I couldn’t understand why most of the robots were humanoid. In a rescue situation, I feel like 90% of the robots would fail just because of the design. Let’s say that these robots are sent into a building that’s collapsing, now because of its design, RoboSimian could go in and if something were to fall on top of it, it could probably continue while the humanoid design would become crush or damaged. Another scenario could be crossing a hallway in an apartment building. Maybe a floor on a higher level has given way, could RoboSimian plant its legs on the wall instead and get across that way?
