Tested: DJI Phantom 3 Professional Quadcopter
After flying and testing the Phantom 3 Professional for a few months, we review DJI’s latest consumer quadcopter. The Phantom 3 is a worthwhile upgrade to last year’s Vision+, improving on flight system, gimballed camera, and integrated wireless video transmission. But if you can’t edit 4K video, we would get the Advanced model. Plus, plenty of sample footage!

Thanks for the review Norm, good shit. I wish I had $1000 to buy one of these for my dad, he would be stoked to fly around buildings (he is an architect) and I could see him enjoying getting unique videos from a quadcopter pov. Until the laws are settled out about flying a quad in a populated area though I don’t think I would purchase one for him even if I had an extra 1k.
After having one of these for a few months now I can honestly say that the idea of the 4k is great. The execution is meh. They don’t have the bandwidth for the codec they need in 4k. In some cases where the scene is low detail naturally (like a sandy beach) things are fine but man if you do a flight over a detailed area like trees full of leaves the codec can’t keep up and BAM you get lots of little blocks all over your image.
Tis a shame since the 4k looks great when things work out. I wish I could use it for more scenarios.
Great review, to echo some comments here, 4k ‘over the air’ is an issue with more complex scenes, but a great device which leads the industry for consumers at this price point.
