Show and Tell: Synology DS1019+ NAS

Norm and Tested producer Gunther sit down to talk about their use of NAS boxes for media serving, backup, and photo editing. We use Synology servers at the office for file management and collaboration, and the five bay DS1019+ at home works well as a Plex server with its hardware accelerated transcoding. What do you use as your media server and backup solution?

  1. do you have a good tutorial for building a NAS server exclusively for PLEX like you talked about? I’m running it off of a desktop now but don’t want to destroy it doing that

  2. I have been using Drobos for years and really like them for a NAS, but for a media server, they don’t really cut it. So I have been looking at the DS1019+ for a couple of months to use as a media server and your video has me thinking that really is the way to go.

  3. I don’t need a server but I back up everything on the cloud. I used to have a NAS but it’s kind of not relevant to me anymore.

  4. It could very well be Apple’s fault, but I have yet to see a Time Machine backup actually complete successfully with a Synology NAS. Their forums are full of suggestions to backup to something else first and then copy it over to the NAS which is just plainly ridiculous.

  5. I got this exact model last year to use both as a photo server for my photography and as a Plex Server and it has been working perfectly! So if you have been thinking about it, I am going on a year+ and had no issues.
