Adam Savage’s New Moon Model Globe

Adam and Norm check out this beautiful model of the moon, which just arrived at the cave! We take a close look at its detailed topography, and Adam brings its craters into sharp relief with his new high-powered flashlight!

  1. I wonder if any impacts big enough to register on this model have happened during human history… I hope they have a policy of updating the model 🙂

  2. That’s an amazing globe! Looks really, very detailed. Glad you didn’t get the internal LED lights which would look unnatural.

I saw these come up in my news feed a few months ago, but the one you have looks to be of a much higher quality:

I was going to suggest setting it on a turntable with a spotlight on it to mimic the real moon, but forgot the moon is in synchronous orbit (g’doi!)

Would you consider ‘painting’ the areas that appear darker from the earth?

Awesome video, Norm’s little face when Adam said it wasn’t going to be kept in the shop (I feel your pain Norm).

    Love from UK!

  3. I need this in my life. 🙂 I am surprised though that they didn’t color it, as the moon has lots of shades of gray and slight color.

  4. (jokingly) Adam, what do you mean you don’t want it to be covered in dust?! That’s weathering and adds to the accuracy. It accumulates it’s own regolith.

What a beautiful model. I’m always awed by globes. You should seriously consider airbrushing the coloration onto it. I understand the risks of messing it up are high, but only a hardcore selenographer would know what you got wrong.

  5. right? whatever landed on it naturally he could dust off periodically and sell as ‘savage moon dust’ in small envelopes. 😀

eventually, the vintage of months with barely any making time will be worth a fortune.

  6. I also thought about buying this globe, but the price is high.

In the vid it looks like there is a mold seam on the surface ?

And this would make an awesome painting project, Adam are you up to the task ?

  7. So does Adam have 4 postcards? Or 3 postcards and a duplicate? 😝

In all seriousness, this is a beautiful model and it’s nice to see the Fire Sword in use on camera.

  8. Cool. Maybe someone can do one like it.

I feel like one could perhaps improve it a touch: maybe paint it accurately and exaggerate the surface relief a bit?

Really “shines” when you hit it with the light. Kubrick would be envious.

  9. I love the model of the moon. A question. Did you notice that many of the craters are hexagonal in shape. There is a reason. To esoteric for this venue. Great work. Love Tested.

  10. Isn’t the theory for hexagonal craters that there are subsurface structures collapsed by the impact? I’m pretty sure I read something like that once, and they pop up all over the solar-system, not just the earth’s moon.

I imagined it like a sandbox with a layer of ice on top during winter, if you impact that surface, it’ll crack along certain lines and make a geometric-looking shape rather than a perfectly round hole.

  11. I love how exited and happy Adam is! The “Thats their biggest size” – “Jipp!” Sound like a child the day before its birthday getting asked, if it knows, what day is tomorrow 😉

  12. The surface of the moon is changing all the time. Craters are not caused by impact. When a meteor hits a surface of and object there is ejecta and debris. The lunar surface is not like that. Most craters are hexagonal in nature. Many craters also have a pimple like center.

I should also add, I have a photo taken by a Arizona power company where a massive thunderbolt of lightning struck near a transformer. It left a hexagonal shape on the concrete.

  13. (still joking) I just noticed, the title says New Moon Model Globe, but the thumbnail clearly shows a Waxing Gibbous Moon. Come on, Tested, get with the program!

  14. Very jealous! Looks amazing. I’m curious why you wouldn’t smooth out the 3d printing layers before the molding process though? (tantamount to removing tooling marks). Unless this was intentional?

As an aside, my daughter wanted a globe of the earth and I was disappointed with the mass produced ones so I set about making a more accurate homemade version. I stumbled across Bellerby and sons while researching what kind of paper to print the map gores onto. Gorgeous globes. Surprisingly, I am using a very similar process to them, although I’m using a 12″ spherical plastic lampshade from Home Depot and my black and white laser printer to print the 18″ long thin gores that get glued to the globe. I am producing the map with the open source and free QGIS program.

When I was trying to find a large plastic sphere to buy, I saw a lot of DJ Deadmau5 heads, one of which was a video including Adam – I have come full circle!!
