Episode 536 – Ten Years of Slate Life – 1/30/20

An extra-long moment of science to kick the episode off this week as we discuss the facts of the Coronavirus outbreak and what concerned folks should know right now. We also look back at the iPad’s announcement ten years ago, and speculate on a Fast saga-Bad Boys crossover. Plus, love for The Walking Dead in the VR Minute!

  1. To give Mr. Beast credit, he doesn’t really offer random people money for those endurance challenges, most videos of that nature involve members of his team. Of the videos I’ve seen where he does stuff like that with members of the public, he has called off the challenge and given money to everyone involved. For example, when he opened a car dealership selling used cars for $1, he put three people in a car and said the last person to leave won the car. An hour or so into the challenge, he told all of them they won a car and to pick one from the lot.

When he did a “win money by eating carolina reaper peppers”-challenge he substituted the pepper with a fake, so people didn’t actually suffer for hours with the aftermath.

For all the clickbaity youtubers out there, he genuinely seems to be a thoughtful dude.

  2. Get your flue shots always. The protein sequence of T cell (and B cell) receptors that determine defense against pathogens is constantly randomly recombined from DNA sequences that are fixed in the genome. A large variety of sequences is created constantly. Thereafter the immune system selects form these randomly combined receptors those that are successful in detecting a pathogen and amplifies cells that express that sequence to mount a defense. A vaccine just helps pre-selecting receptors that can be helpful. This is super important as it saves days on mounting a successful defense. Other wise it is left to chance whether you mount a quick response or by chance take longer or fail to do so. This impacting ‘natural resistance’ through vaccines is dangerous non-sense.

  3. If you’re looking for guest ideas, I’d like to hear from Patrick Norton, Shannon Morse, or Veronica Belmont.

  4. Norm, I’m disappointed. MGM owns the Stargate franchise. Brad Wright, one of the EPs behind all three shows, has been in talks recently on a revival with a new show (not a web series like Origins).
