Podcast - This Is Only a Test

Episode 35 – The Podcast on the Edge of Tomorrow – 11/4/2010

On this week’s candy-fueled episode, Will and Norm are joined by a special guest to chat about all the crazy hardware we’ve been testing, why there are so many TV streaming boxes on the tested schedule these days, Microsoft’s Kinect, the WDTV, the new MacBook Air, and the problem with Tootsie Rolls. All that, plus your questions answered, and a secret science projects in this week’s show.

  1. JoelTGM just replied to your comment:

” If you really do have a $1000 machine, then look into getting Battlefield Bad Company 2.  It’s quite a thrill to play, and the multiplayer is awesome with the destructible environments.  I play Quake Live, Counterstrike Pro mod, Bad Company 2, and am messing around with the Lead and Gold steam beta. “

Is the Lead and Gold steam beta an open one? Secondly, does BFBC2 seem like it has longevity, I never considered purchasing it because to me it seemed like it would go the way of MW2 “

No you have to prepurchase the game; it’s like $15.  Yes BC2 has longevity, there are a huge number of dedicated servers, and it’s just a lot of fun.

  2. Hmm, I really shouldn’t listen to this now, when it’s so late… Bah, tomorrow’s Friday, who gives a fuck if I sleep through most of it.

  3. – There’s a place down here in LA called Hello Pizza that makes some really good specialty pizzas.

Their Potato Gold pizza is amazing: Tomato sauce, mushrooms, ground beef, corn, onions, sliced potatoes, bacon, crushed-up salty tortilla chips and sour cream. The crust is filled with a sweet potato mousse and then topped with cheddar cheese before being cooked.

It’s like having nachos and bacon cheddar potato wedges and pizza all at the same time. It’s so good! :O

  4. get a roof tripod that is used for Terrestrial tv antennas then you wont have to drill into anything and you can run the cable in through the window sill

  5. and The advantage of DLP is you usually get more for your money. Also both LCD and DLP the picture degrades over time but once you replace the bulb in a DLP TV the picture will look like new. Of course with the LCD there is no such luck.

I look forward to the Windows Phone 7 review.

Welcome back to the iPhone 4.

    Thanks for another great podcast!

  6. the whole tested team assembled makes the best podcasts.
ANA IS A NARC? I KNEW IT!
Ana need to be exposed to more technerdery, so she can test stuff and get into the discussions better, but I do like her stance as the “REGULAR JOE” sometimes.

  7. I have to admit, the show is livelier and more funny when Ana’s on. Give her an intern or something to lighten her editing duties. Or feel free to take a portion out of my $50 and hire another editing dude or dudette. Heck, use the whole $50. And I find it funny how Will is like Columbo in how he refers to his wife as “the wife” and never by name. Or is that her name? Hmmmm.

And I don’t think the Mac will ever be  a closed platform. You can’t get away with that on a full-fledged computer. Absolutely no one will put up with it. Mac sales will sink to ZERO.

Oh, so when does bidding on the Hurka-Robles masterpiece start? I need to start investing in some fine art.

  8. I think you guys may have underestimated how far it is to the moon.

Using the mean diameter of the moon and earth, and the shortest distance between the center of the moon and earth. You can estimate that the shortest distance between the earths surface to the moon’s is roughly 220,585 miles.

If you have 50 billion dollars in 100 dollars bills (as per the question), and you stacked them all longways (so each dollar bill going 6.14 inches into the air), you would only be able to stack them up to ~48,453 mi into the air. Not close enough to reach the moon.

If however, you had 50 billion dollars in 1 dollar bills, and you stacked them all longways. You would be able to stack them up to ~4,845,328 mi into the air, more than enough to reach the moon.

If you wanted to reach the moon by stacking them up with each one flatly being on the last one though (so 0.0043 inches into the air) you would need roughly $2,276,271,646,462 In 1 dollar bills.

Anyways, I was just bored and wanted to do some math. Fun podcast, was entertaining.

  9. Looks like Norm won the bet. Megamind is estimated to make $44.5 million this weekend. Bow before the MegaNorm!

  10. Will has no clue what the fuck he’s talking about. Each Skittle has a distinct flavour that matches its colour. I just tested this with a pack I bought, and my tests are conclusive.

  11. I’ve been messing since I listened to the podcast today. Yes, I’m slightly behind but decided to visit Cleverbot.  The thing is making me laugh my ass off but scares me too. It wants to visit me in five minutes.

  12. Suggested a $300 netbook for my mum to use, and she gets along with it, but I hate it. It can barely run a YouTube video at full speed and is slow in general when starting up and loading programs. From that experience I wouldn’t go near buying a standard PC netbook again.

  13. ” I’ve been messing since I listened to the podcast today. Yes, I’m slightly behind but decided to visit Cleverbot.  The thing is making me laugh my ass off but scares me too. It wants to visit me in five minutes. “

    Stranger Danger!

  14. Alright, that sounds intriguing. Maybe you and Ana should wager something first. Just know that you are absolutely, completely, 100% wrong in every way imaginable.
