Podcast - This Is Only a Test

Episode 77 – Gary’s Back – 8/4/2011

On this week’s episode, Gary gives a lesson about balls, Norm does a live test of the MacBook Air’s battery, and Will desperately tries to keep the show on track. All that, plus the latest on the new BlackBerries, HBO Go on consoles, AppleTV’s new streaming capabilities, the problem with Instagram, and fake outtakes.

  1. 🙁 This always comes up when I’m at university and can’t access/listen to it.

The torture of waiting till I get home

  2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has some incredible practical effects. They did somewhat of the opposite of today’s standard and did many things with practical effect that could have easily been done with special effects.

  3. Did Will showed everyone his junk at 58:33?

Also, I strongly recommend Norm trying out Opera.

You’ll fell in love with the stack feature and never wants to go back to chrome or Firefox.

  4. Scratchers? You California hippies are weirdos. Scratch-offs.

edit: The thought of modern-day remakes of Aliens and JP frightens me. Since CG is so raaaaaadical, I just know there’d be a sweet car chase with raptors grinding along the fences, aliens doing backflips into vents, etc. For some reason everything has to be so XTREME now.

  5. Fantastic show this week. Tested_Show sounds like it’ll be awesome, so I can’t wait. So glad to hear about the BLLSL, which will be amazing, I’m sure.

  6. Very weird podcast this week.  All over the place – even more so than normal.  I blame Gary.

The depressing – we are all old fat and balding talk.

Norm’s belief that buying for resale is a scam.

Gary shitting on any web content that requires you to watch an advert, and Will agreeing – despite Whiskey sites, you know, carrying adverts 😀

  7. For podcasts, another amazing app is iCatcher, which I use and love. it gets updated a lot too so the dev is always tweaking and adding new features (especially love the “Leo Jump” feature that jumps 2 minutes forward with an “L” gesture. If you listen to Twit podcasts, it changes your life)

  8. Gary really brought it this week. I also love the how the discussion about grey hairs got increasingly personal, eventually revealing much more information about the guys’ manscaping habits than anyone had really asked for.

  9. I am starting to not like the smugness of Garry.

Also, removing Save As.. is retarded Apple move. How long until Garry thinks it is amazing?

Whiskey has never had ads before videos on the websites, only in places they can’t control them like Justin.tv.

  11. Regarding the shaved head question from Will: I’ve been shaving my head for a couple of years; if you use a razor (I use a Mach3) your head gets a natural shine from the oils on your skin. Shaving your head isn’t for everyone, it looks great for people with nicely symmetrical heads like me, but if you have a lumpy head you will end up looking like a badly peeled potato.

That’s not true. 2 years ago Giant Bomb use to have sporadic 15 second ads in front of videos.

    Here’s some proof:

It was only in the US so as far as I know it didn’t exist.

  13. So is the Tested show going to be like Top Gear and have shit humor and casual racism which is fine apparently because it’s just a joke. Will it also feature an annoying little shit like Richard Hammond and a complete twat like Clarkson?

EDIT: Wow that sounded a bit harsh in retrospect. If you’re making a show I am sure it will be good but I wouldn’t compare yourself to the presenters of Top Gear.

  14. I’ll agree, the smugness factor is starting to get out of hand. alittle too much off topic stuff this week, hopefully they might reign it in next 😛 keep up the good work either way.

You know what both things also feature? The ability for you to choose not to watch or listen to them. With the “reality” television that gets high ratings in the US, Top Gear is among the least of our worries in terms of inappropriate content on the air.

Also, if there is a Top Gear comparison to be made, Gary is most certainly the Clarkson of the show. I know he hates him but the humour through smarminess of Clarkson is definitely what he duplicates. Not saying that’s necessarily bad, it’s what many people like about both him and Clarkson. But yeah, Will is definitely not who I would compare against him.

  16. I like Top Gear most of the time but its unwatchable some of the time. I was being a bit harsh and was tired in my unedited post but I think the idea of the Tested show is quite good. I wrote that as a bit of an over reaction, but like Gary said there is nothing wrong with trying to be the Top Gear of tech shows. However I honestly think that when Top Gear is bad it is much worse than any reality TV. I can choose not to watch it but most of it shouldn’t even be broadcast. There is a difference between bad quality TV and offensive TV. There is no excuse of homophobia or racism in this day and age especially for one of the most popular shows on the BBC. And the pathetic excuse they use of “Its only a joke” is totally unacceptable for any adult. I also just hate Richard Hammond for different reasons as well.

  17. Yeah my initial comment was a tired over reaction to how you were talking about your show and Top Gear. I liked the show and like Gary said there is nothing wrong with being the Top Gear of tech shows. I should refrain from posting when so tired.

Censoring things that some people don’t like is the beginning of the end. I’ve seen every episode of the series and the situations you refer to I agree are in bad taste but I wouldn’t go so far as to call them full on racism or homophobia. Have you seen most HBO stand up comedy shows? What Top Gear does is tame in comparison. If you think Top Gear shouldn’t be broadcast, I hope you’re also prepared to ban those too or shows like Jersey Shore which are built around embodying racial stereotypes. You can’t stand Top Gear, I can’t stand reality television. Nothing wrong with either of those viewpoints. The difference is that I don’t think reality television should be censored, I just refuse to watch it. The episodes of Top Gear you refer to aren’t going to turn anyone who isn’t racist or homophobic already into one. In my case, I look at Jeremy Clarkson via the persona he presents in the show. I know he’s a right-wing jackass in real life which is why I don’t pay attention to what he has to say outside of Top Gear.

  19.  I have not seen Jersey Shore but a show featuring people who conform to racist stereotypes is not the same as the presenters of a car show labeling an entire group of people as lazy and feckless, or making distasteful comments about gay people. Its especially different if its on an entirely publicly funded TV station.

They are not just in bad taste they are mean spirited and they are persistent. Comedians make jokes about race in light hearted  ways, Dave Chapelle for instance. His jokes are about race but are rarely racist. Even if they are its a comedy routine, its expected. They aren’t going to show a Jim Davidson, Bernard Manning or Roy Chubby Brown comedy routine on the BBC because those are offensive comedians. They have an audience but they in no way politically correct or fit to show on the BBC. Yet the “jokes” Top Gear make are fine even for a show with a huge audience of children as well as adults and is shown at 8PM.

I was hasty and censoring them is too far but the comments made should not be made in the first place. They ruin a show that for the most part is quite good. That’s why I hate these crass, unfunny and pointless jokes, they completely destroy an entertaining and other wise light hearted car show with mean spirited rubbish.

I wanted to explain my standing on this simply because I don’t want to be mis interpreted. I don’t mind  Clarksons conservative view on the world I just think his comments like that are unacceptable for what Top Gear is suppose to be about.

  20. Glad to have Gary back! This podcast was awesome and completely insane, I loved every minute of it!

  21. Great show AGAIN, stop it! I did not expect some of those topics in the beginning to ever come up on tested, I never thought I would know if Will shaved his meep or not…. :p
