  1. With how late these podcasts are getting out, it’s really cutting into my special “Me” time.

And that’s the only time I get to bake bread 🙁

  2. Bags: Last year I bought a Tom Bihn 13″ Ristretto – and I’ve been so happy with it – it’s just a few dollars north of you’r 100$ pricepoint, but they have other bags at 100$ – They might be worth taking a look at.

One thing i really like about the ristretto, is that the laptop sits vertically, and since I have a rather slim figure – its much more pleasent to wear, and looks no where near as bulky as even a normal messenger bag would. And don’t get me started on the shoulder strap – really nice, and I would even recommend getting a separate strap, just to make you’r existing bag that much better.

Yeah Tom Bihn bags are the shit. I’ve got one of their older laptop bags and that thing is bullet proof. Right now I’m using a Tumbuk2 bag since I need something that’s a bit more versatile than a pure laptop bag.

  3. As far as bags to test, Marware and Timbuk2 bags are both worth checking out for different reasons. I find that Timbuk2’s are generally more practical if you need things other than your laptop (the 2-day trip bag, or if you carry a lot of adapters, cables, etc.), while most of Marware’s offerings that I’ve seen have been sleeker and less bulky (but as such, less voluminous). Carried a 15″ MBP’s daily for 3.5 years in a Marware messenger bag (lasted me a computer and a half, really), but their offerings and my needs have shifted slightly. Went looking, found a good deal on a Timbuk2, now I live and travel with that (and it’s quite pleasent, though the bulk took a bit of getting used to). I don’t know what the 13″ scene looks like from either of these manufacturers, but their 15″ offerings both get my seals of approval.

  4. I’m with Norm on this one. Efficient poops are the only way to go. Who really likes to read or anything with the smell of their own shit radiating beneath them?

  5. Space rant time!

For reference, with regard to the space jump/balloon topic, “the last guy who did this” was a total badass, and is one of my personal heroes.

the rest of the jump was anticlimactic because everything had worked perfectly

Seriously, what a boss. This man carries the character of the quintessential explorer, space or otherwise.

Every period of exploration or expansion into the unknown (circumnavigating the glove, sailing west to the Americas, crossing the continent by wagon) brought with it countless people who died silently, horribly, and without glory. A part of me wonders whether that exploration would have happened at such a pace if the stories of those inglorious unfortunates were better known by the people of their time.

Were they (the previous generations of explorers or astronauts) genuinely tougher human beings, or was this attitude circumstantial? (By whatever mechanism, desperation and poor access to statistical information included.) What maintained their drive in spite of the odds?

I mean, when you sit and ponder how different the scales of space exploration are compared with what our species has already accomplished, it is easy to get discouraged by our seemingly meager progress… the road ahead looks daunting (even considering the idea that all explorers of their time likely thought the same thoughts before seeing to their duties).

Men like Joe Kittinger give me hope that the steely “explorer instinct” might be an innate characteristic of at least some human beings (it does not take many); real frontier men, willing to ride the edge of what is considered possible for their generation, men who are unsatisfied falling short of their potential by accomplishing only what they “have to” and who are ashamed (rather than afraid) to die before scoring some great victory for humanity.

I have heard the argument that space exploration should be a government operation because investors are risk averse, and cannot stomach death and failure like a government can. Governments and tax-payers are not immune to this risk fatigue either, and are fickle in their priorities… so I’m left to wonder about just how the funding specifics will work out in the future for non-orbital missions. Somehow we need a system where the money doesn’t walk away from the table before these brass-balled explorers do.

Whatever the answer is to funding and furthering our efforts to continue exploration, I’m confident that this select breed of explorer will always exist, and that their existence will always work as a positive force to further the state of humanity. Men like Kittinger are what I base my hope upon for humanity to someday seriously challenge the frontiers of space.

  6. Dont be, being a dad is the most amazing thing. I have two kids, one is six and the other celebrated his first birthday last week. Yeah, you have to give up a ton of “me” time, but you are exchanging that for having a kid. You probably wont get what that means until you see your child for the first time with your own eyes but something inside you switches and you will see the world totally differently. I love tech and games and media and everything else I expect the Tested audience are extremely into but I can tell you now that there hasnt been a phone invented, a game created or a movie shot which can even compare to how brilliant a hug from my daughter feels or how awesome watching my son crawl for the first time was. There are few things in this world that are better than watching your children get stronger every day and you are going to be very lucky to see that first hand.

Oh, and if you think baby shit is nasty stuff while they are still on a diet of milk, just wait until they start weaning!

  7. 90 fucking degrees? No, that is NOT a proper pushup. Get your freaking chest to the ground!

By the way, a set an hour throughout the day is a great way to boost your max pushups, or get into doing pushups.

  8. (lack of NFL, NHL, MLB? Too many other countries??)

Ya know, I’m really sick of this kind of crap. You know that’s not what the US is actually like, right?

  9. Mitt Romney has just been to Europe. He clearly left the wrong impression on some of us!

Except he’s not even that type of stereotypical American, he’s just a fucking fool, not in any way particular to being American. No excuses!

  10. He is probably going to be the face of America in about four months though, isnt he?

You guys should get a royal family, you can have whatever piece of shit you want in charge then because when people see a lovable 86 year old dear as head of state they dont care as much about the guy who actually holds political power. A hot princess or two probably helps also.

  11. Good show. I would’ve liked to hear more discussion on the burger meat grinder but you can’t have it all.

  12. Why would Will expect people who don’t subscribe to NBC’s cable channels to be able to watch NBC’s online Olympics coverage which is almost totally ad-free?

Cord cutters like Will have real entitlement issues.

  13. Because of the way BBC deftly handles the whole affair by comparison, and because of the fact that it’s an international event that’s supposed to be about the world coming together for everyone to see, not just those with a cable subscription. If you’re really defending NBC and the cable companies here, then all I can say is that you and I fundamentally disagree on this issue.

HA. No… no one really stands a chance at this point, between saying things like “I’m going to filter the entire internet of porn.”

Ya know, dangerous government regulation. Wait, isn’t that the job of the democrats?

No one will vote for a man that gets between them and their porn.

And also Obama. I don’t even totally love our currently president, but he’s a pretty good guy and does a decent job in office. Most people like him, and of course the incumbent has a pretty big advantage simply by the nature of their position. And he was a pretty significant force without that advantage. I don’t think anyone is as close to the center as him, and that’s a pretty big issue. You don’t become president by shitting on gays (the amount of flip flopping he does makes it clear he’s just using the LGBT community as a bargaining chip, and even then he’s been primarily ) and saying you’ll North Korea-ify the internet. That’s a bit of an exaggeration, but my point is he’s done a lot of stupid things that aren’t getting him a lot of actual popularity. And here’s a bit of proof for you!

  15. The BBC is a government organization funded by the public’s payment of TV licenses. NBC’s coverage of the Olympics has been terrible in many ways but I don’t expect them to give it all away for free to everyone in the country considering how much they payed for it.

  16. Sure it is, but that still doesn’t change the simple fact that their coverage is leagues above and beyond what NBC can manage to throw up on the screen. Just because something is a certain way doesn’t mean it’s right, and that we shouldn’t expect better, especially for an international event.

  17. Laptop Bag Candidate

    Will,

I just bought the Eastern Mountain Sports “Pingo” bag for $85. I love it. It has a separate slot for a laptop and a lot of not-too-deep pockets, which are great.
