  1. That’s funny Will that you mentioned the speech impediment since I had the same one when I was a kid. Instead of saying There, it would come out sounding like fair, since my T’s came out as F’s. I kinda just grew out of it though.

  2. Preemptive post – Windows RT takes up so much space because WinRT actually does sit on top of Win32. Surprise!

  3. LotR-nerd warning:

Regarding Tolkien wizards, there was not quite a wizard for every color.

Five Istari were sent to Middle-earth by the Vaular to aid in the fight against Sauron. Saruman the White, Gandalf the Grey, Radagast the Brown and two blue wizards. The only mention of the latter in LotR is when Saruman accuses Gandalf of wanting ‘the staffs of all five wizards…’, but more information around their quests can be found in other Tolkien texts.

Both of the blue wizards (named Alatar and Pallando, I had to look the names up, its been a while =)) travelled, or were sent, to the lands east of Mordor, which explains why they weren’t directly involved in the LotR storyline.

Their impact on the events leading up to the end of the Third Age changed during Tolkien’s lifetime, so a few different versions exist regarding the success of their mission.

  4. I know some people that grew up with the speech impediment Will spoke of. Turning the “tr” sound into a “ph” or “f” sound is not that rare. The people I know just grew out of it with no counseling needed. Perhaps it has something to do with language comprehension and practice using the tongue (more than it does a physical defect).

I am interested in seeing where the mini tablet market goes. For the past 12 years new devices have been released almost every other year. from ipods and mp3 players to tablets and mini-tablets. At what point will innovative technology become too redundant and consumerism stagnates? Microsoft has practically come full circle with desktop tablets which are basically lighter laptops.

Trick-or-treating is 5 years ago. The custom has definitely waned in popularity. Kids have so many other things to occupy their time that free candy and socialization doesn’t have the same appeal anymore.

  5. You’re pretty close with the linguistics stuff Norm. The difference between pairs of sounds like k/g and f/v is the vibration of the vocal folds (which are located about where your adam’s apple is). You can feel the difference when you hold out an f for a long time, and alternate with a v, going fffffffffvvvvvvvvvvffffffff. You can do it with s/z as well.

On the other hand I’m not entirely sure where the tr/f alternation would come from, but then again I don’t specialise in child language acquisition.

  6. So what is millionaire’s bacon? Is it just a particular restaurant’s name for their bacon? Bacon made from a special cut of the pig? Or with a special seasoning? Siri was useless 🙂

And was I hallucinating or were there a lot of iOS notification sounds in the podcast? I heard several dings while I was listening but didn’t get any email, so I suspect it was coming from the podcast itself.

  7. I’m wondering if I should skip this one. I like Mr. Whitta, but I doubt he can resist some political gassing on.

  8. Can you guys please stop pretending google docs is as functional as Office? Word maybe, but the doc spreadsheet is terrible! Maybe ok for organizing a few things (e.g. cars with mpg, price etc) but anything more than that that it’s worthless. It’s not just the lack of functions, but it’s slow and janky to use, menus are severely lacking and their layout is crap. I only use it for the most basic things, otherwise it’s way faster to get things done properly in Excel or Libre office. This goes for both work and personal

(and for most of my work purposes the lack of VBA/macros make it worthless)

  9. A few episodes ago or in Oktober cast, I think I remember saying there was going to be a new TiVo soon. Is this the TiVo 4 premiere ? Or hold I wait a few months before getting TiVo?

  10. I’m not a pheasant plucker, I’m a pheasant plucker’s son and I’ll keep on plucking pheasants ’till the pheasant plucking’s done.

  11. I love you guys, please though, someone’s iphone/ipad mini /iDevice was going off audibly every ten minutes…..

  12. I love that Norm thinks turning off notifications is cheating but having a bunch of friends calling/texting the other participants is ok. Only in Norm’s twisted world!!!

  13. Ah Bullseye.

He has killed someone a hundred yards away through a window…with a used toothpick.

He has dealt with an armed squad rushing into a room to get him by throwing a plate onto the floor…killing them with the ricocheting shards.

Comics are a plenty weird place, because as stated, someone as good as him with aim would be an easy multimillionaire if not billionaire (competing in multiple sports). Same with all the gimmicky super scientists toiling to rob a bank for a million dollars…using their flying mecha suit.
