Okay, while you’re mentioning Luc Besson movies with Jean Reno, I have to insist that you hunt down a copy of their first film together, The Last Battle. Post-apocalyptic, minimalist sci-fi shot in B&W. It’s been years since I last saw it, and it’s a bit hard to track down, but it’s great (even though it totally ripped-off a Twilight Zone episode).
I wonder if you could slowly piece together the location of the Cave by going through arrest reports in the San Francicso area…
THIS! It’s possibly my favourite Gary Oldman role EVER, with the potential contender being as Smiley in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which is the complete opposite of Leon-Oldman.

No relation to “The last Battle” they talk about in Spin City, I guess, wherein they find a crummy script that sells for a million dollars to Jean-Claude Van Damme.
The low light shooting that Kubrick did was also used in Eyes Wide Shut, he lit scenes with existing fixture light only enhanced if needed with suspended ball lanterns. He also push processed large amounts of the film up to two whole stops, which, from a cinematography/photography standpoint, I find amazing.
You too can shoot with the famous f0.7 lens from NASA/Barry Lyndon. I’m sure it’s cheap to rent.

Probably not. This was Besson’s first film, shot with little to no money, starring no major actors (in 1983). This film never made anyone any money. There’s also no dialog, so probably no script in the traditional sense.

It totally makes sense for Adam to have a curtain around the front door.

I believe the Stanley Hotel in Colorado was Stephen King’s inspiration for the Shining.

I don’t know much about his broader exploits or his lesser known works but after Maine, Colorado does seem to feature heavily in his works.
I had to stop at Jean Reno interlude and mention the film Wasabi. An excellent film with a fantastic mix or French and Japanese humor. If you haven’t seen it go get a copy for your next movie night!

I could have sworn the room number in the shining wash 217. I read the book in 2004 my first month in Iraq and my company was the 217th. I remember thinking how appropriate it was that the most terrifying room in this book was room 217. I could be wrong or the movie could be different i don’t remember. I saw the movie much earlier and cannot remember.
Douglas hired Kubrick to direct Spartacus because of Paths of Glory, not the other way round. By all accounts, Kubrick detested working on Spartacus.
I really don’t want to be this type of guy but “City on Fire” is a Hong Kong movie, not Japanese.
It stars the incomparable Chow Yun Fat and is fantastic.

I’m pretty sure the sound was censoring the name of one of Adam’s sons. If Adam wants to have a private life and not let everyone know everything he does and the name of everyone in his family that is his right.

In King’s novel it’s room 217. In Kubrick’s film he changed it to room 237.

what’s up with the hostility? Firstly, I don’t have a problem with them censoring his sons name. I do however would prefer them not censor cursewords.
Secondly, no they don’t “owe” me anything. They do however provide a service that they must probably would like their audience to like. Since they probably rely on ads to pay their salary, they are also interested to listen to hear what their viewers think. They do not run this blog for fun in their spare time.
This makes me want to go back and watch ‘The Shining’ and ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ again…
Kubrick was hired to finish directing Spartacus after the producers fired the first director.
And Fear and Desire is first Kubrick movie. But Kubrick was not happy with it. And not or never release in theatres.
Oh and I forgot…Adam…you should see definitely see the The Killing and The Killer’s Kiss.
The last scene of the Killer Kiss as been copied so many times since then.
And the edit of the Killing is/was just revolutionary !!!

Correct, that’s not the only change Kubrick made to King’s book and as talked about in this video the one guy mentioned “Room No.” turned into “Moon”. I would love to talk to Adam about this more in detail or either one of the other two in the interview because there is much more to it than that. Adam also says that he thinks Stephen King is off on his opinion that The Shining is one of the 2 worst adaptations of his books. The reason King said that is because Kubrick changed several main elements of King’s book. I hope you read this Adam to know why King remade The Shining as a TV mini series in 1997 to make his own book the way he wrote it.
My observation on the Moon Room is this:
Earlier in the movie Jack is throwing a ball at what the actor said was an “APache MOtif” (APollo MOon) on the wall which looks like rocket ships once the camera angle shows it head on. Jack is really throwing the ball at it as if to say look at this picture can I be more obvious!! Then he throws the ball down the hall. Later in the movie Danny is playing with trucks on the carpet in the hallway. As we look down on him the carpet looks very close to the launch pad from which the Apollo 11 rocket launched from. As you see, very similar. Next, the ball Jack threw from earlier in the film (which was thrown at what looks like rockets) rolls up to Danny. It rolls right up the line in the carpet that looks like the road to the launch pad. Danny stands up revealing his shirt which says “Apollo 11 USA” with the rocket on it. As Danny stands up off the “launch pad” it resembles the rocket launching off the pad. Danny then starts walking to the room he is not supposed to go to. What we see next is the key w/ key chain in the door (now open). The key chain says “Room No 237”. Stephen King wrote 217. Now, Danny said “REDRUM” in the movie which we find out in the mirror says “MURDER”. So let’s use another word backwards. Switch the “N” in “No” and “R” in “Room”, this turns “Room” into “Or Moon”. It is the Room or Moon. Now let’s also take the 3 “ooo’s” from “Room No” and put them behind 237 (which was changed by Kubrick). You get 237000. The Moon, on average, is about 238,000 miles from the Earth. Very close to 237,000. Changing the 7 to an 8 may have been too obvious a change. Now let’s recap; Danny launched of the launch pad that the ball had rolled to, he then traveled 237000 “miles” to the Moon Room with an Apollo 11 rocket on his shirt!
There are many more references in this film that suggest a “dual meaning” to the Apollo Mission that Stanley made in this film. However I have not jumped to any conclusions, like some people, about why they are in the film. Note: Kubrick changed King’s car from a Red VW to a yellow VW. Later in the movie you see the Chef travel from Florida (where the rocket launched from) to Colorado. On his way he passes an accident in the snow storm revealing a Red VW smashed under a Semi-truck. Coincidence? Heck no!!! Is this Kubrick telling Stephen King “I destroyed your story”?
Next, Stephen King’s book only has 1 girl in it that Danny sees, not 2. Look at the twins holding hands (that Kubrick puts in the movie). Now look at the constellation “Gemini”. The Same! This constellation is twins holding hands! Now look to see what NASA’s space project was right before Apollo. It was GEMINI.
Many more interesting things I could point out but I’ve already typed enough!
