Episode 255 – Where’s Lando? – 5/1/2014

This week, Norm is once again joined by Jeremy to talk about the Atari ET game cartridge excavation, researching laser cutters, the future of human-computer interaction, and the casting for the new Star Wars film. We also take some listener questions and geek out about flying quadcopters.

  1. Hey, I’ve got a Silhouette Cameo also! Great little vinyl plotter. I bought mine a couple years ago when I was looking into making my own vinyl decals. I was going to get a Graphtec Craft Robo, but I didn’t know how much I would be using it so I couldn’t really justify the price tag.

However, I was at a trade show, and this booth was having a special on the Silhouette Cameo and I couldn’t pass it up. Been using it for the past 2+ years and it’s still working great. Sometimes I wish it could accept a little wider vinyl (only goes to 12″) but other than that, no real complaints.

  2. Where is Lando?…exactly my question too.

Also what about Frank Oz, Hayden Christiansen, Ewan McGregor, or a CG Alec Guiness? (probably not at the read through).

  3. The Facebook campus is a very much a campus/theme park. It’s like a mini Las Vegas that was designed by a 17 year old.

  4. When I worked at an engraving shop we used corel draw to do the design work for the laser. I always figured the printer driver was the most expensive part of the software side

  5. Maybe I missed this but the Comixology thing only affects iOS devices. Android there’s no huge change apart from billing coming from the card on file for your Comixology account, which is actually kind of nice since now they have a shopping cart vs clicking & confirming each issue.

  6. Jeremy,

Check out BossLaser. They are out of FL and customer support has been great and the product does what I need it to do. I got a 170W laser tube, and the 3650 bed. Really happy with it and use it everyday.

  7. I’ve got a Silhouette Cameo as well that I just bought over Christmas that was intended as a gift for my wife. So far I have only made a few cards with it but it is pretty fun to watch cut intricate designs. It’s marketed toward the scrapbooking industry but it is really a home version of the professional level Graphtec cutters. Its pretty affordable, I had bought it around $195 with starter bundle with Amazon lightening deal. I think you should have a demonstration video on printing and cutting papercraft. I found it very fun to use.

  8. Hey guys,

I bought a “Full Spectrum Laser” 5th generation ‘hobby’ laser (45w) for under $4k and I can do A LOT with it. It does only handle 12″x20″ material size (although the bottom does come off so you can put it on a larger piece of material), but it fits on a desk return. Yes, it does require a bucket of water, but it’s pretty quiet, considering what it does.

I modified it with a 120mm computer case fan for the ventilation and ran a metal dryer vent hose out the window – works great.

Last year I made a good chunk of money making wooden Christmas Tree ornaments. I just need more projects. Here’s a few things I’ve done and TESTED with…

  9. Thanks for bringing the Silhouette Cameo to my attention! I’ve been wanting a vinyl plotter ever since I got to use a Roland CAMM-1 at work in early 2000s.

Those are still pretty damn expensive for a home budget ($1000+), but the Cameo seems like a great solution for a fraction of the price. (BTW. I wonder if the name is a hat tip to the CAMM.)

Norm also mentioned printing cutters. Roland has one model (the BN-20) Jeremy might be interested in, it’s made for desktop use and is relatively inexpensive for what it does. ($6000 vs. $10-20000)

  10. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/ is not a reliable sourec of news – they are known for making stuff up. If you were quoting the BBC or the Guardian then that might be a bit more beliavable

The daily mail is aimed at people in their 70 onwards who see the past as golden and fear the future, they are also strongly right wing so much so that they supported the british fascist party, and in the 1930’s spoke warmly about hitler and his work in cleaning up germany of its defects (mental and physical disbaled) and lesser races (gypsies and jews) right up till the start of the 2nd world war (1939-45). Since then their attitudes have not changed.

I do however have a solution in the form of https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/kitten-block/
