Podcast - This Is Only a Test
Episode 356 – Back from Down Under – 6/30/16
Sorry for the lack of an episode last week–we were abroad in Australia and New Zealand for some video shoots. In fact, Norm rushes directly to the office from the airport to record this week’s episode with Kishore and Jeremy, sharing some info about the trip and catching up on two weeks worth of technology and pop culture news.

I spend a lot of time in the bush etc. These are the best products I have found for mosquito repellent (may have to order from Canada though).
Portable Unit – Thermacell, has a butane cartridge and a repellent pad. Absolutely amazing how well it works. You can buy packs of refills for it once you have the unit as well. Great for hunting if you don’t want to spell like bug spary.https://www.wayfair.ca/Thermacell-Mosquito-Repellent-Olive-Appliance-Holster-with-Clip-MRHJ-L78-K~CERM1003.html?refid=GX82589483207-CERM1003&device=c&ptid=165018875283
Spray – Amway – D-15 http://www.amway.ca/Shop/Product/Product.aspx/D-15-Insect-Repellent-Spray?itemno=602643
Lotion – Watkins https://www.amazon.ca/Watkins-Insect-Repellent-Lotion-240/dp/B001EJONG8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467317123&sr=8-1&keywords=watkins+mosquito+repellent
Hope this helps. Good Luck
Ha – I just got the Thermacell unit. Tried it out in Yosemite and it was pretty good, but going to put it through a real workout in Canada.
I use the Repel 100 Deet – I prefer the stuff that you spray in your hand and then spread to ensure better coverage….so far. http://www.repel.com/Products/Personal-Repellents/Repel-100.aspx
For lotion, I’ve been using the picardin based Skin So Soft: https://www.amazon.com/Avon-SKIN-SO-SOFT-Bug-Guard-Moisturizing/dp/B0001ZWPI4/
Beyond that – I have a portable zapper (doesn’t seem to work), a CO2 generator type thing (doesn’t seem to work), a physical mesh hat (works but is a pain), and the permethrin used to coat clothing. http://sectionhiker.com/treating-your-clothes-with-permethrin/.
I hope that Adam has fun at the exploritorium.
re weather/voting behaviour i disagree with jeremy here. you have one camp that tends towards remain, i.e. what you’d expect to win because leaving the EU would be nuclear level bonkers. you auto-assume that you can’t realistically lose. on the other hand, you have camp leave that’s fired up for changing something/sticking it to the man/whatever. camp leave is much more more highly motivated to turn out in full numbers at the voting stalls. look at this and mind your trump, america! the trumpanzees will all be voting, so not voting out of complacency is not a luxury you have.
DACs in portable audio i completely agree with jeremy on this one! those who just listen will use anything. those who care about their audio experience already have a system in place that doesn’t have any possible benefit from switching from audio jack to whatever: they’ll use a dedicated audio player, they’ll use actually good head/earphones (better than anything officially licensed apple), and they’ll use a dedicated headphone amp if their setup mandates it.
however, i can’t really see old apple as a money as side effect to quality company vs current apple on a slippery slope towards a moneygrab club. their unique (i loathe to call it ‘better’ because that’s highly relative) user experience always came at a more than generous premium, even back when it still outperformed non-apple boxes in photoshop, quark xpress, etc.
teslas popular in europe i have to say i don’t think i’ve ever seen even one. (germany)
new quake episode i finished it, and it’s pretty damn sweet. go play it everyone! engine wise, i recommend quakespasm. i don’t think i’ve ever had less need for tweaking when getting quake to run on a modern computer.
other than that, welcome back norm, great podcast everyone, and i can’t wait to see all the weta goodness you filmed. 🙂
If you are looking for great movies to watch, I can’t recommend “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” enough. A recent New Zealand release by coincidence seeing Norm’s New Zealand visit.
Glad you had a good time in NZ Norm can’t wait to see some footage.
My visit to WETA Workshop
Great show, keep it up. I’m having a hard time hearing Norm.

Norm is very quiet this week.
Norm: you should run a 1/8″ to 1/4″ cable from the headphone out on your Surface to the open Neutrik jack on the Zoom recorder.
Iff you’re reacting badly to the proteins in a mosquito bite you should try one of these to neutralize them as soon as you get bit:

I got one a couple of years ago and it’s been a big help. Though you should bare in mind it’s based on heat so it might not be suited for someone with a low tolerance of pain, since it can feel uncomfortably hot for a moment.
Here in Finland the Model S is a pretty popular car, I see them daily, even though with our taxes it’s a very expensive car. (Prices start at about 90 000€ )
