  1. sorry, trying to upload this 8GB podcast video file on a 1Mbps connection is taking forever. it’s only moved up to 64% at this point, so will take a few hours still.

  2. Great podcast, going to have to get down to London with my kids to see the museums soon.

Peter Stormare is the guy who played Lucifer in Constantine.

  3. Great spoilercast, all!

I agreed with all the praise and the one lingering criticism that despite all of David Thewlis’ acting prowess, we just weren’t “scared” of Ares in that form.

It’s a tough problem to solve because, as Adam pointed out, you know Diana survives the fight. I’m not sure stunt casting would have solved the issue (might have been distracting), but perhaps Norm’s idea of flashing through a bunch of wartime leaders might have worked, especially if they were recognizable as historical leaders. I’d even have liked to see recognizable men from the (then) future like Hitler or Hussein, implying that Ares’ influence on man persisted beyond the end of this movie and WWI.

The other way to raise the stakes would have been for Ares to do more to directly imperil Diana’s friends. Steve’s choices and death were set in motion by Ares’ whispers, but he didn’t actually cause it. If Ares had been able to show his power in a way that threatened the rest of the team, or Themyscira, or something other than just throwing stuff at Diana, it might have made him more scary.

  4. Great cast at always. Norm, Adam, I sympathize with the sore shoulders. I’ve done London (twice), Paris (twice), Frankfurt, Okinawa with a heavy camera bag strapped to my side in one form or another. Next week I’m headed to the Big Easy with a big camera bag, but a smaller backpack bag for the daily expeditions. I hope this will overcome the pain of too much gear. If it’s good I’ll let you know. Keep up the good work and welcome to Tested Danica!

  5. Had to comment here because YouTube audience is full of sexist pigs (thank you tested website audience for being so much better). It was a great movie and I hope they keep it going. It was refreshing finally having a female character whose attack style wasn’t strangling guys between their thighs.

Also Danica was great, I hope she shows up more frequently in videos. That is if it’s something she’s interested in.

  6. If anybody wants to know more about WW1, here’s a great start.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it sounds like the writers screwed up a bit. If you need villains with almost cultish behavior you really don’t have to look much further than the Black Hand in Serbia. They kicked the whole thing off, with the Austrians declaring war on Serbia over the assassination of Duke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. A perfect example of a small event kicking the bloody 20th Century. Just the thing that a god like Ares would do.

As for face injuries I did a blog post on how plastic surgery and prosthetics got their start as a result of casualties during the Great War.

Warning, many of the pics are NOT pretty. I’ve been following along with the Great War Channel and the utter senselessness of the whole thing is just mind boggling.

  7. It’s great to have Danica in a video where there is room for her to show her knowledge and give her opinions. Keep on including female voices on Tested. It’s really worth it!

  8. Saw it yesterday, it made me slightly sad, because it shows how much better the DCEU could be if someone besides Zack Snyder had directed the Superman and Batman installments and if they’d let a bit of humor and heart into it.

The Themyscira scenes are going to inspire a lot of kids to don WW armor.

The final fight does fall into the Snyder trap of umpteen back-and-forths, and I have to agree on the villain. The idea of him not being a typical scary-looking guy even though he is the god of war is interesting, but there is just something profoundly unthreatening about David Thewlis.

  9. I’m late to the party– but the unspoken line “I am not a man” links back to Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung:

After defeating Wotan, Siegfried passes through the flames to find someone on the ground. Removing the armor, he is startled: “This is no man!” Ironically, the sight of Brunnhilde’s feminine form teaches Siegfried fear for the first time (234). Humorously, at Brunnhilde’s “Are you blinded by my eye’s devouring glance?” (242), we hear the dragon motif.

So the unspoken line goes back much farther!
