I have learned (Probably by listening to Robin Renzetti) that the repeatability of a 3 jaw comes from the amount lack sideways movement in the spiral. Therefore it is good practice to always use the same key at about the same torque. The corollary is that is you have slop you can actually move the chucked part a tiny bit by changing the pressure on the three different keys to shift the spiral plate on purpose to make it run more concentric.
I would not bother with a better 3 jaw (because it’s probably only marginally better). if you going to buy a new chuck get a 6 jaw. grips better with less deformation on stuff like plastics and think wall. if you want more repeatability use collets, a 4 jaw or centres. and there is always the don’t take it out until it is finished and you part it off because it will be concentric however bad the chuck is..
