Brought back a very happy memory of attending the premiere of 2001: A Space Odyssey in London. Surprise invitation because I’d helped out a friend with some rostrum camera work. The impact the film, especially the Star Child sequence, had on the audience was quite amazing. PS: Only when I was leaving the cinema did I realize I’d been sitting next to Mick Jagger.
In case anyone is traveling to Washington, DC between April 8th and May 28th, (it is Cherry Blossom season right now), the National Air and Space Museum has the exhibit by Simon Birch that is a replication of “The Barmecide Feast”, a 1:1 replication of neo-classical hotel room from 2001. It is free (like all Smithsonian Museums) but you need a ticket for this exhibit. The ticket gives you two minutes in the room with five other people. If you live in DC and made the mistake of going to this museum during tourist season, you would understand the two-minute tour.

I guess I’m a phone Luddite, I have an honest to goodness landline that is not cordless so when the power is out I can still make a phone call, and use it regularly. I kinda have to have it as well, without moving in my apartment I can go from 5 bars to no bars, freaky coverage and radio wave eating geography. I also dial numbers on my cell so I don’t have to rely on my contacts so if I don’t have my phone I can still call anyone from a different phone. I guess I’m a belt and suspenders kinda guy.
ETA: Holy shnikes Batman, I saw 2001 in the late 1970’s and I am a bit younger than Adam?!?!?! That really blows my mind.

2001: A Space Odyssey the movie switched the location to Jupiter from Saturn because Douglas Trumbull wasn’t satisfied with his ability to create convincing rings around Saturn in visual effects – something he managed to do later in Silent Running.
Saw 2001 in a theater when I was maybe 12. In those days (the 70’s) they would re-release films from time to time to theaters. Mind blown.
Pretty sure 2001 did *not* use actual photos of Jupiter. Artwork I am pretty sure.
Looking closely at 2001 recently on Blu-Ray, I caught some Nixie tubes in one of the spaceship consoles. LOL.

I think the explanation of 2001 from the college student you are referring to (Adam) is from “The Making of 2001: A Space Odyssey” from like the early 70’s. (I have an old paperback.)

To answer the query about the Jupiter landscape in the Pod sequence of 2001 – it was actually filmed on the island of Harris, one of the Outer Hebrides islands, off the West coasts of Scotland and the actual location used is near the start of the famous “Coffin Walk”:
The route starts from Loch Airigh on Harris’s rocky east coast. The island is renowned for its extreme visual contrast. This was also the route followed by the coffin bearers, as the soil in the east of the island is too thin for bodies to be buried.
The area near the start of the walk stood in for Jupiter in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Just after Loch Airigh, the ground is composed predominantly of large rocks, exposed by melting glaciers. The rock, known as anorthosite, is similar in composition to that found on the moon. This barren landscape was filmed from small planes, and tinted using coloured lenses to make it look even more otherworldly.

Up keeping an eye on a sick animal last night, and needed to put on a movie…. Found myself rewatching 2010 for the umpteeth time….. I very much like that movie.
It sort of makes me wish that someone would mash up 2061 and 3001 into one screenplay and make that movie to round out the trilogy.
