Show and Tell: R2-D2 Sixth Scale Figure

For this week’s Show and Tell, Norm shares a new figure created by Sideshow Collectibles in their Star Wars line of sixth scale replicas. This is one of the finest R2-D2 reproductions we’ve seen at this size, with articulating dome, touch-activated lights, magnetic panels, and plenty of accessories. All its missing is sound effects–you’ll have to provide the beeps and boops yourself.

  1. Got mine in the mail a few weeks ago – love this little guy! I agree with you that he’s a little light, but I’m happy to overlook that. The only other thing I’d add is that he’s a little unstable with the drinks tray on, since you can’t have the third leg out, but again, not a big deal.

  2. It is nice indeed, especially because of the little tidbits. However, I don’t really like the look of it, the plastic makes it look too much like a regular toy. There’s something about other materials that don’t seem to translate well with this kind of plastic.

Then again, I would only ever buy a statue like this, when it’s crafted to a higher standard. I would buy this if it was a make-it-yourself-kit, the fun would be in doing that.

  3. Wow Norm, this is fantastic! I really, really want me one of those units now!

It seems like I’ve been binging on R2-D2 for the past week. Last Saturday, Valentine’s Day, the Museum of Flight in Seattle hosted its annual Northwest Scale Modelers weekend and Bob Jacobsen, a local hobby store owner, brought out his full-size home-built R2 unit to entertain the kids and he gave a presentation on the build process.

Here is a link to his blog: http://bobsr2adventures.blogspot.com/

And just yesterday (Sunday Feb 22), I took my daughters to the Experience Music Project in Seattle to tour the recently opened “Star Wars and The Power of Costume” exhibit there. That was phenomenal as well. Since it was a costume exhibit, the R2 unit they had on display was one of the Kenny Baker costume versions and you could clearly see the cutouts in the feet area where Kenny’s feet would fit in for walking sequences. You and should definitely check this exhibit out if you guys come up to Pax Prime later this year. The showing runs thru October at the EMP and I’d be happy to host you guys for the day! Hell, bring Adam while you’re at it – the more the merrier! 🙂

  4. So cool!

The price is a not too bad, but if I get one, then I want them all…
Thinking of just making my own scaled one instead with plasticard and 3d printing..
Or rather build a life size one out of different scrap materials that I could gather.

  5. OMgosh if Technical Illusions’ CastAR could be combined with this toy, you could actually have a projection that looked like a hologram. (Maybe Microsoft HoloLens too)
