Meet Jason Freeny, Custom Toy Sculptor

While in New York, we visited the home and workshop of Jason Freeny, an artist well-known in the custom toy community for his anatomical sculptures. Jason transforms inanimate characters, such as designer vinyl figures, into anatomical cutaways, revealing the imagined body parts under their plastic skin. Here, he explains and demonstrates his sculpting process.

  1. I remember when Jason first started posting his work online. I was working for Tomopop and people absolutely lost their shit when we posted his work!

I loved his stuff instantly because I use to draw cutaways of animals that I called “What’s Inside” featuring things like the stomach of a Panda bear with bamboo in it or a rabbits ears as bones in the cutaway or the bones in a giraffe neck, so his work instantly resonated with me.

It also had a lot to do with being a toy maker as well and just being fanatic about toys in general. His work was a breathe of fresh air.
