The first time I went snorkelling I was given a faulty device.
Each breath also included a small bit of water. It was a very unpleasant experience as each inhale gave a quick sense of drowning.
At the end of the session I borrowed my friends mask and had a few minutes of bliss beneath the sea.

However the hyperventilating technique is a myth itself.. It will wash out the CO2 in ypur blood, making you feel like you can hold your breath longer.. The amount of Oxygen is the same, and it may increase the risk of you passing out, as the signals are delayed..
