Inside Adam Savage’s Cave: Space Glove Vacuum Chamber

For a friend’s birthday present, Adam recently made this mock vacuum chamber and airtight space glove from scratch, and shows us how it works. The vacuum box is part prop and part puzzle–the user has to manipulate a set of nuts and bolts to complete a circuit and activate a sign. Best birthday present ever!

  1. I’ve been spending a lot of time at the MSI (Museum of Science and Industry) here in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL since I live about 3 blocks away and every January weekday is free for Illinois residents. This is exactly the type of exhibit that they would need there. The space section of the museum has amazing historical items but the interactive portion of it is pretty bare.

    Really cool stuff!

  2. – Hey Adam – WOW I sure wish you were my friend! All i got for my last birthday was a beard trimmer and a Barnes & Noble gift card. Your imagination and mad fabrication skills never cease to amaze me!

  3. Just a slight correction, the Apollo suits (A7L and A7LB) were pressurized to 3.5 psi, while the current suit (EMU) is to 4.3 psi.

  4. That ribbing you see is actually a rounded edge bellows in a real suit. IT maintains a constant volume for joint as it flexes. How those joints are made is a secret of ILC, who make the suits.

  5. Here is one of my favorite nerd quotes.

“Actually, a gift certificate is worse than cash, because you can only use it in one place. And it expires. it shows defective thought. You’re trading perfectly good money for something that does the same thing, only not as well.”

  6. This is so cool! I wonder how difficult it was getting the glove and sleeve to seal with the container. It looks like the clear walls are super thick!

  7. From what i can see he only pressurises it to 3.5 inHg which is only 1.71 psi.

    3.5 psi is 7.12 inHg.

He achieves the effect he wanted though.

  8. It’s beautiful. I love the way he thinks through these things and comes up with a solution.

I do wonder, if it’s a right handed glove wouldn’t it make sense to have put the switches on the left?

  9. My friends and I are seriously thinking to make one of these. Just wondering if the white plank he used is delrin? And is there a way to find vacuum pump for not too much money?

  10. Brian…I don’t understand why the vacuum gauge was read wrong other than a silly mistake… (BTW, I had a comment about pressure under my Youtube name “Carl Winchester” for this video). If the vacuum was only at -3.5 in.Hg or -12 kPa why not say so.

There could be air leaks, a bad pump, who knows…so you might never be able to get the vacuum down to -7.1 in.Hg, -24kPa or a differential pressure of 3.5psi

  11. You can buy a pretty inexpensive vacuum pump from Harbor Freight. Something like $100 before the inevitable 20% off coupon. I use it from laminating woods, and occasionally for some slight bending.

  12. I work for a new nonprofit company in Idaho called Discover Technology. We partner with educators to help lead students into experiential, hands-on discovery in STEM. I’ve shown this video to my boss and said that this glove box would be a good addition to our setup. She told me to make it and now I realize that I don’t know how to make an air tight box like this. Could you talk some about how you made the box and if you could reply to the question concerning the air pressure units that’d be great too.
