cool. those kits looks super complicated though.
They appear really complicated, but building them is not. I bought one of the Chinese copies and built it (me being willing to spend 20 bucks on it to try it out, and not close to 100), and it took me just over an hour. It is all about getting the hang of how each “leg module” goes together, and once you do that, the rest of it takes about 10 minutes. Having built the cheap one, I want to buy a couple other kits now.
I think an average middle schooler could build it in a couple hours without help, but a little bit of determination. Don’t let the perceived complexity scare you off, it is huge fun to play with, and it makes me smile when I see it on my windowsill. Buy one of the ebay versions, and enjoy the process!

My favorite 3D printed Strandbeest model so far is the Animaris Geneticus Larva. It’s so small and intricate and it moves really well too.

seeing the heat-bent pvc pipe piece reminded me of people making actually not entirely bad bows that way, from pvc pipe. the trick is in being able to manipulate the width and thickness of a shape with a constant circumference, and changes in thickness affecting bending stiffness to a much higher magnitude than changes in width.
The kits are doable, the instructions can look a little daunting, until you just start putting it together. And then realise you have to figure it out once, then repeat the same process six times. The kit is pretty easy to put together. I was in Japan last year and found the same kit Adam originally had. Instructions were all in Japanese, but it was all self-explanatory. You can find an English translation of the instructions online.

Turn the lightjar upside down to turn it off, turn it right side up and it is on again…

I really enjoy how Adam always seems so genuinely, absolutely chuffed and appreciative when someone does something nice for him – as opposed to the typical celebrity stereotype. He always seems so excited, I hope that’s not just television face. 🙂
