The Zoidberg Project Completed and Revealed!

The Zoidberg Project is finished! Effects artist Frank Ippolito guides us through the entire fabrication process, including design, sculpting, molding, and even some animatronics to bring Zoidberg to life. Suited up in the costume, we walk the convention floor of WonderCon 2014 to greet some attendees and take photos with other cosplayers. Woop woop!

  1. Dr. Zoidberg lives!!

It looks incredible, Frank!! Great job on bringing this wonderful cartoon character to life.. 🙂

  2. Frank, is that a lifecast of Dick Smith on your wall, next to the red mask? Great work on Zoidberg!

  3. Oh man. That is just entirely too brilliant!

Eyelids and some moving eyeballs would work wonderfully too, but I reckon what’s really needed is a speaker housed in the torso frame, with some snippets of Zoidberg’s dialogue. Maybe even just WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP.

I also loved that Jamie was on that inspiration board. 😀

  4. Superb work Frank, it looks amazing!

The video really brought back memories of when I went out in my costume, everyone loves Zoidberg! The amount of photos and hugs people want is unbelievable. I also remember just how damn hot I got in my costume.

This has been a wonderful series, thank you so much and I look forward to hopefully seeing more of your work in the future.

  5. At the beginning of that video I thought, “Oh no, I’ve got to wait while they finish parts. Oh well, the update is nice…” and by the end I was laughing in my chair, being the office maniac and getting weird looks, and basically just giggling at how cool it was to see a IRL Zoidberg.

Props to Frank for walking around in all that rubber for hours on his birthday!

  6. That is so, so cool. Everything is just so beautiful and gorgeous and…

Even the molds look great, the way they fit together. Congratulations, Frank, Norm, Ben, Tested crew and everyone else involved.

Any lessons learned here? Anything that, in retrospect, you would’ve made differently?

Exactly. The costume is awesome as it is, but these additions would really make it perfect.

  8. That would have been amazing to see in person. As it is, I really enjoy the clacking noises of the hands.

  9. It looks fantastic. I’d love to see Billy West in it with a mic and speaker like someone mentioned. I think that could cause the collapse of the known universe though.

Also the Jamie on the board easter egg is hilarious.

  10. So completely awesome. The feet would make great lounging slippers (provided they’re squishy comfortable).

Norm did a nice scuttle too.

    Full of win.

  11. I absolutely loved the part when he circled the bible sign guy.
Why do people do that at wonder con! No one will listen!

  12. Absolutely Fantastic! Hahahaha.

Zoidberg was the perfect character for a costume like this: He’s roughly human shaped while being decidedly not human. He’s instantly recognizable and people know how to interact with him because he’s such a flat character. Also, he has a signature pose built right in!

    Incredibly well executed

  13. The guy at 11:00 with the long hair is actually one of the directors of Futurama… How cool!

  14. Very nice! It turned out great. The part where Zoidberg scuttles around the protester was hilarious!
