Tested Builds: Automata Model Kit, Part 1

About time for a week of building! We’re joined by Frank Ippolito, who introduced us to artist Sam Cobb’s resin automata model kits. We bought two of Sam’s Anglerfish kits to assemble and paint this week–a lovely way to wrap up the year! (Follow along the rest of the week by joining the Tested Premium member community!)

  1. Hey, the Morris Museum! I lived in the area when I was a kid. Moved away before they got the automata exhibit, but I always used to love watching the model trains in the basement and looking at the fluorescent rocks and mineral samples under blacklight.

  2. wait do I need to avoid this until after then? I don’t know when this was filmed but I’m going in as spoiler free as possible (I haven’t seen a trailer since the Japanese one).

  3. So, is there any reason not to prime it with a white base so you could do the things Norm talks about in the beginning? Like copper or more of a silver/chrome color.

  4. A detail worth clearing up: you have a single automaton, or multiple automata. This was a very dull video, chaps. It was fine as familiar background noise, but you won’t win viewers this way.

  5. Wow, I figured I would go buy one to build along….ahh nope Damn $300!! I’m all for support artists but damn, that a bit much… cant play in water that deep…spraying $100 worth of paint on $300 kits with $300 Compressors and $200 guns…

Norm did raise a good question “how do you know when to stop?” My Art professor once said “The difference between a house painter and a Muralist is knowing when to stop”

  6. on the subject of knowing when to stop, i remember a line from richard schmid’s painting book ‘alla prima’, that even a good artist needs someone to rap them over the head when the painting’s done. i always found it reassuring that even someone with so much more experience than me acknowledges this as a real problem – that you want to stay on it and polish a bit more of this and a bit more of that, until you fixed everything to death.

i did like this video, though. yes, it’s not one full with explanations and stuff, but i really like watching norm gain experience in arty things. the video may be light on the ‘hard skills’ stuff, but it’s so telling on the ‘soft skills’ side of things. norm got a good bit of routine in handling the airbrush, so what he faces now isn’t problems like ‘how do i operate this thing’ but ‘how do i manage the many facets of this craft’ and ‘how do i make artistic decisions’.

i know the feeling of being intimidated by the complete freedom of choice once you’ve taken off the training wheels. latching on a bit to frank’s choices probably isn’t a bad thing – just to go through the motions of a proven process and see the results emerge in/by your own hands. it’s similar to copying master drawings. merely analyzing lines doesn’t get you even near the level of understanding you get from feeling yourself drawing them, and noticing how different they feel from the lines you’re used to making.

  7. it would be better to not show anything than to show part and make us join to see the rest. not everyone can afford to be a member and most people hate to be teased like this.
