Inside Adam Savage’s Cave: Glue and Paint Carts

With a little more time on his hands, Adam is continually working on projects in his workshop. Some of those projects are building out the Cave’s infrastructure. We stop by to check out his newest glue shelves, which are made from old airplane food service trolleys! Here’s how the refurbished rolling carts radically increases Adam’s efficiency in the shop!

  1. Airline carts! Love it. Have been waiting a while for a video on these. Ran out and bought one because of thanks to you guys around two years ago! Hard to find one with drawers included for less than $300 any more. Managed to snag mine for ~$175 shipped somehow.

Here’s mine in its natural habitat: http://imgur.com/gallery/P0sTHpd

  2. I went crazy a few years back and got a palette of 18 galley carts from a place in Austin, TX. The company that maintains the database of airline salvage parts in the various warehouses and companies across the country has a monopoly that makes it challenging to source galley carts.

I ended up keeping half the carts, selling the rest at cost. They hold all manner of things around the garage, bathrooms, bedroom, man-cave…. The ones I picked up look brand new to my eye — that they’re in such nice shape is how I can justify having one hold towels in a bathroom.

Drawers are a challenge though…. I ended up just cutting shelves from Baltic Birch for a few of the carts that really didn’t need the whole drawer treatment (I found some plastic organizers like the ones you see from Plano that fit nicely on shelves in the carts — great for small parts like screws, nails, nuts, etc.).

There are the half-size galley carts like Adam is sporting and then the sort of double-long ones that you see going down the aisles on an airplane (serving drinks out of both ends as the airline hostesses do double duty). I think most people would prefer the half-size carts as they are more portable. Just something to look for….

  3. Excellent use of the trolley’s Adam! Now I need to see if I can get one or two from somewhere.

Was funny to see Adam struggle with the drawer, because that is the exact same thing I see our flight attendants do everyday.

  4. Excellent use of the carts. When I’m working I’ll have to look for some. I built a little caddy out of plexi a while back to handle glues and applicators, but it took a hit from my Sherline lathe when I was taking the lathe off the shelf and sort of got smashed. I need to glue back together with some reinforcement.

  5. This looks very nice, but it would be awesome to see what you do with simple stuff. Like the drill bits, the screw drivers and REALLY common tools like that. Some of us, (at least me) is a super amateur.

  6. Great build as always. If Adam keeps kicking himself for not filming his projects, might I suggest a live streaming camera in the shop? This can be an incentive for premium members. Of course, it would need to be turned off during those “secret” builds. You wouldn’t want to give anyone hints on the costume you’d be working on for your next convention.

  7. I have one of the airline carts that I converted to be my lanparty gaming rig a few years back. Even held my LCD screen internally nicely for transport and then mounted on the outside for game time. Kept the bottom drawer for mouse, headphones and other assorted cables and things.

It’s long been retired and was converted into a recording station for my vinyl ripping. It’s currently laying dormant as I haven’t bought any vinyl for a while. May have to resurrect it in another guise.

  8. I wonder if Teflon strips or something similar would help the drawers run smoother? Might be worth a try.

Also, slightly off topic: I’ve been thinking for a while, I’d love to see Adam design and build his own blaster / fantasy pistol, what with his affection for the Blade Runner pistol and Han Solo’s blaster. I mean maybe with a sort of hypothetical brief, as he would if he had to build one for a film etc.

  9. It’s the corporate safety guy in me, and I do know you know what you’re doing, but it always skeeves me out when I see flammables not store in flame cabinets.

  10. I noticed you didn’t end up making a place for your air brush in the end. at least you never showcased it. What are your plans for the airbrush now?

  11. IKEA are selling roasting dishes very similar to airline cart drawers, if the cost of an airline trolley is out of your budget , they are €7 each here , you could build a plywood frame and use these with a decent set of castors for € 100
It has a lip all around so can be mounted in either direction
