Show and Tell: Rey’s Blaster Replica Kit!

Prop maker Bill Doran (aka Punished Props) visits our office this week to share one of his recent builds: a replica of Rey’s blaster from Star Wars: The Force Awakens! Bill shows how he designed the blaster to be assembled as a kit, and we put one together! (Find Bill’s blueprints and other fabrication guides here!)

  1. Working on mine based on ‘s PDF plans as I watch this video! Just trying to figure out how to model the grips in Autodesk Inventor. They’re a bit pesky…

  2. Curved objects are indeed a bit of a problem in Autodesk. I believe
that in one of Bills videos documenting his build he mentions having modelled
    those on Maya.
Also yours is looking pretty good. Nice job.

  3. Yeah, I saw that – I unfortunately have no experience with Maya so I’m going to try doing some surface modeling in Inventor first. Might be useful to learn Maya for future projects though.

  4. Hot diggity! Looking GREAT! I ended up modeling the grips in Maya. I’m better at polygon modeling for more organic forms.

  5. Yay 😀

Maya is great for that kind of stuff, it’s my primary modeling software. Just don’t forget that it’s also really expensive.

If you keep having trouble with it, you could check out the models that are freely available on Thingyverse, there are a few versions of Rey’s Blaster on there, you could use the grips from one of them as a base for your build. There is no shame in working from something pre made in order to learn from it 🙂

  6. Usually done with a radius IIRC. You just have to find an origin. Of course, it’s been 5 years since I have used it. So I might be mis-remembering.

  7. This is mine. Ordered the 3D print from ebay. Sanded, assembled and painted. Mine became a bit mor weathered but it must be one from the later movies, yet to come : )
