Tested Builds: Real-Life LEGO MiniFig Cosplay!
Our latest project with Frank Ippolito lives at the intersection of creepy and amazing. For this year’s Comic-Con, Frank designed, sculpted, and painted a LEGO-inspired mask, made to look like a real-life version of a minifig. We’re calling it the creeppyfig, and it found its way home wandering through Comic-Con’s exhibit hall.

Nightmare fuel
My god, Frank. That is terrifying. I can’t believe none of those kids started crying – they just looked befuddled.

That looked like it was fun.
That is a wonderful take on the yellow plastic skin of your typical minifig. The slight yellowish almost jaundiced skin tone and the deep vascular pigmentation of the slightly translucent skin. The ears are my favourite aspect of his design! Can’t help see that and wonder what his world is like… moist, dark, and possibly living a semi-aquatic life…
All in all a great Job, congrats!!
Wow, your mannerisms were fantastic. It was amazing watching the character coming to life. Would love to have Frank on Still Untitled for a Comic Con costume conversation.
That was alot of creepy with just right amount of cool added. Overall great video. I just found it weird that more children reacted to Frank’s costume than any of the adults (especially that group that had the wicked witch in it). Well done guys.

Those molds make for very efficient vapor barriers. No wonder you’re dripping sweat. Other than adding a bunch of holes, how would you overcome this with said materials? Any other processes to overcome this on a very long film shoot?
omg, is frank’s performance off the charts amazing or what? i really don’t want to diminish his workmanship in making the mask and hands (THE HANDS!), but the performance is what made this go above and beyond. so cool.
and i really love the way the kids reacted to him. that’s pretty much a whole sappy/dark 80s-ish fantasy film plot right there, isn’t it? alleged fantasy creature turns out to be real. after contact with society, people in general are disgusted by how much not-fantasy-y he is, and it’s just the kids who can see beyond the surface.
Fantastic work guys. Great mannerisms from frank. Just enough creepy to be intriguing (although the fingernails were cringe worthy) looking forward to seeing the build.

That’s the first thing i was thinking about when he was putting that thing on. The only thing i could think of was buying an air pump (maybe one for a fish tank, but there fairly loud) and running the tube in there full of holes, and another tube letting the air out. Not sure how well those things pump air.

First, I think that Frank’s minifig is amazing.
Frank has made it to Huffington Post in the category, “Weird News”. It includes the tested.com video, it is pretty obvious that the reporter never watched it. The reporter find that “This kid handles meeting a monster surprisingly well.” Tells me that the kids did not see Frank as a monster. Tells me that the reporter never played with Legos.

Just a thought, maybe tested.com should visit the Huffington Post with Adam, Frank, Norm and Simone (and a big bag of Legos) and talk to them about cosplay and legos.
Hahahahaha, this was fucking awesome. I was creeped the fuck out and loved it all at the same time.
So, obvious follow-on: accessories! The ubiquitous wrench-flatblade is a must, but also perhaps some ‘hairpieces’, and some T-shirt ‘uniforms’ (like the t-shirts with a ‘suit’ printed on them) would be cool.
