Adam takes you on a tour of Tom Sachs’ Space Program: Europa exhibit, currently on display at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The massive gallery is filled with Tom’s plywood creations, including the mission control and LEM replicas used for his Europa mission.

It’s when an artist goes all in like that, that something happens that is hard to explain but wonderful to experience.
Wow, I immediately recognized the Verti-Bird toy. I guess that alone dates me. 🙂 Best toy from my child hood.
(Saturn V had five engines on the main stage. Yeah, I’m that guy.)
I love all the various “stations”. For some reason the re-entry station with an actual small metal capsule getting heated with a gas torch looks to be my favorite.
I’m sort of torn regarding his art — it’s almost so slap-together that I feel like it is a draft or prototype. I want to see the “finished” LM.
But then I think back to the clay camera he did for his father as a child (that you showed us at the beginning) and I realize the guy is essentially still in make-believe mode. He is still the kid playing with foam-core and Sharpie’s. Instead of a secret clubhouse in the attic though he now has a budget and reputation that allows “pretend” on a larger stage.
That’s cool.
This is the ‘Finished’ LM. If you want to see another version of a finished LM, NASA has built one. Using the methodology of Bricolage, the logic and story of every component, piece, screw or nail, is able to be re-animated into a narrative by the viewer. Through this process we can enter into the mind of the artist. All art at a certain level is pretend.

Toms utility in all of his work is astounding. I absolutely love the purpose built nature of the rocket firing effect with a place for all the shattered mirrors as well as new replacement mirrors. That honestly made me sorta giddy when i was looking at it.
I am seriously considering a road trip to go see that, thank you for sharing.
that was truly amazing. as someone who lives in new work state i can only hope that one day soon Mr Sachs will have the time and the passion to do a space program in Manhattan ( again). THANKS ADAM
I want to call attention to the fact that in carrying out a faithful, but democratic replication of the space program, Thom has made sure to you know to state clearly that you are a specialist and therefor are the only person qualified to operate your station. I think that is important to think about. I also love that he juxtaposes the LM with the Winnebago, … and makes sure to include alcohol as a central feature. In all the times you guys have talked about his space program on this site this is the first time it clicked for me. Thanks! I wish that I could see it in person
I’ve been a big fan of Tom’s work for years, and in spite of seeing dozens of different photos of the landing module, I never realized how huge it is.
Now I get it! It’s basically a reenactment of what we would do as children when we recreate the “real” world with card board. I remember recording tapes and then shooting videos telling the wildest stories that only really existed (or made sense) in our heads.
My son does it with an Ipad now. Also, I built cardboard knight’s armour for my kids just recently.
But this of course takes that childlike sensibility and pairs it with an adult dedication to detail while still sticking to the “let’s use anything we have lying around” mantra.
There is also an interconnection with film and fx work.
There are some comments on YouTube saying a. what’s the point and b. my child could have done that.
I would answer to a. As in all of art “you tell me” and to b. “that’s the point”.
