Adam Savage’s Maker Tour: MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms (Part 4)

Adam concludes his tour of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms with the demonstration of some macro technologies, including a folding machine that can take a single, flat sheet of renewable material and turn it into “a 3D form with tunable elasticity for the modulus.” Prepare to have your head blown! (This series and tour is made possible by The Fab Foundation and Chevron.)

  1. So after 5 minutes in i could not take it anymore.

can we start a kickstarter so Joey can “re-edit” these series, and cut out every time he interrupts the people who are actually saying interesting stuff.

also mad respect for Adam to not have kicked him.

  2. God yes, he’s been driving me crazy every single video, let the student speak dammit. Rudest most annoying guy ever. Shame for such an interesting theme for the videos.

  3. GAWD, that guy was annoying. He reminds me of so many of my college professors. Just shut up for 5 minutes will ya?

Other than that, this has been a very interesting series of videos.

  4. Does anyone else get the urge to grab that guy by the shoulders and yell at him:
FOR GODS SAKE, Please let your colleagues and guests finish a sentence without interrupting!

    Self absorbed narcissist, anyone?

And like already stated, Kudos to Adam for his patience.

  5. Seem like a big ego getting in the way indeed.

    Student: “So, overhere we have…”
EGO: “What he’s going to show you”

    Argh!

  6. the worst about this is: i can see the use in pairing up with a skilled science communicator for a tour like that. just to keep an eye on how conversation is going, and act as an on-the-fly translator for an interested layman. someone with a keen interest and conceptually adjacent skills is a very moving target to prepare a speech for, after all. hard to predict what’s going to trip them up and how much they already know or can deduce from their pre-existing knowledge.

but this guy is not that. yet he kept interjecting with remarks that often didn’t really contribute to clarity at all. the thought that he may think himself a skilled communicator is … ugh. insufferable.

  7. the bad thing is that this whole series is so interesting and it could have been something so good that your science teacher would just show it in school to explain some things.

there are now 7 comments here, and not a single one is about what they are saying, even though everyone here knows how cool this stuff is. a flat piece of paper that folds down to for a shoe sole that has different support levels at specific places, and it can just be punched out in one go, that is insane.

sorry, i was going to go say something more but i was interrupted…

  8. This series at MIT is close to the aesthetic we’re going for with Science in Progress. Context, Tour, Show us what you built – basically discussions of how scientists are makers. I love that this series went in that same direction. Good to see so many people responding positively to the concept – because you’re going to get a lot more!

  9. I turned this episode into a drinking game… Interrupted = Drink.

I can’t stand up right now.

But seriously it was fun watching the expression on the students faces each time they were interrupted
