Making a Large Laser-Cut Dymaxion Globe
We’re enamored by this project by Make Magazine’s Gavin Smith: a laser-cut dymaxion globe. After making our own small scale 20-sided globe, we tweak the files to scale up the build on our Universal Laser Systems laser cutter and test using transfer paper to protect our wood sheets from scorching. Find the files for this project on Make!

This was one of the main projects I had in mind when I ordered my Glowforge. Hopefully, I’ll get to realise it soon!
Great build, saw a photo on Facebook of the smaller one that Norm made. I’ve also just ordered one off Etsy that’s ready to assemble, since I don’t have access to a laser cutter (not yet anyway)
This reminds me of the buckyball that I made from laser cut plywood hexagons, hinges and pop-rivets

See if you can find some sort of hinged connectors so you can flatten out your globe.
The strengths of the Dymaxion Globe are that you can represent the Earth flattened out and the continents are arranged on the polygonal globe such that they are more or less contiguous (not split across a triangles that are discontiguous) and also fairly undistorted and to scale to one another.

In case you’d like to laser-cut a globe with a different type of polyhedron:
I wrote a script which will generate a laser-cuttable Platonic, Archimedean or Catalan solid with a world map projected on it. (The individual pieces have notches, so that they’ll fit together like a puzzle.)
