Adam Savage Gets Scanned and Replicated in Foam!

While we were recently overseas in England, we visited the studio of effects and fabrication shop FBFX–the talented artisans who build some of our favorite spacesuits and superhero costumes for film. Adam visits their scanning studio, where he chats with FBFX co-founder Grant Pearmain about how actors are scanned for digital costume and prop fittings. Adam meets his own scanned clone, made out of foam!

  1. So interesting! Please can they demo some of the footage from that cool medical arm, I’d love to see the super detail he is talking about.

  2. That is quite the setup, but I suspect we might be seeing huge advancements in this field soon.

Two weeks ago I was at a presentation of autonomous aquaculture systems and saw a camera developed for detecting fish-lice in salmon-farms in real time. The company behind it had developed a micro-lens array featuring 40,000 lenses on a single sensor. Using a single camera they were able to capture the geometric surface data as well as the color and texture of individual scales on a salmon that just swam by the camera for a second.

They showed the scan they had made from the data and it was absolutely incredible, a photo-real 3d model down to the finest detail, captured from a moving animal. My first thought was that this technology would speed up 3d scans for vfx by an order of magnitude when it becomes available.

  3. well, the idea is that there is no scanning *process* as such. person stands in the centre of camera array, all cameras go off simultaneously, computers generate heat and numbers, done. so that’s something like 1/60s of physical scanning process and an arbitrary amount of time with an invisible process.

  4. 57, is that a zombie bite? what is that on his neck? what happened to Adam when he was last overseas and do we need to quarantine him?

on a more serious note, if theyre doing fittings off this, wouldnt the person need to be naked (or maybe wearing just briefs) when they take the picture?

  5. What lens do they use on the full frame camera on the medical robot?

    Looks like a 50mm f/1.8 II to me (on a 5DS R)
