Marcus Wu’s 3D-Printed Curta Calculator
Adam walks us through his collection of analog calculators, culminating in one of his newest favorite objects: a 3D-printed Curta calculator that’s a perfect scaled reproduction of the intricate mechanical computer. This incredible replica was engineered and built by Marcus Wu, who started the project two years ago.

That’s an astounding machine. Well done Marcus.
What was that Radiolab where “nothing we’ve ever invented has stopped being made?”
Well, that’s just astonishing.
Still watching, but that box is some of the most beautiful curly maple I’ve seen.
That is one of the most beautiful 3D machines I’ve ever seen, I love, looooooove functional 3D parts and this is the summum of that.
Would’ve been nice to see it calculate something, no idea how it should work. 🙂
If you love mechanical calculators, and find yourself in Bonn, Germany, the “Arithmeum” may be worth checking out. It is a museum that houses the private collection of a former math professor of the university of Bonn, Professor Korte. Apart form calculators, it also houses a collection of modern art, and the building itself is worth a look, too.

Oh man, how I want a Curta of my own. Hadn’t even considered 3d printing to make my own. My dream project for someday is to 3d print my own Antikythera mechanism
Interesting. Pretty amazing piece of machinery given the original size. Would be interesting to machine one to the original drawings. Maybe someday.
a truly inspired craftsman made a truly beautiful and functional work of art
Got to check this out today in person – SO cool! Will definitely be making one down the road. Here’s a throwback to the first time Tested featured a Curta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0cGjC62XRQ
And for those who appreciate fine mechanics fine mechanics also check out the Nagra SN recorder which both Adam and I have in our collections: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGkHIYu9z3E&t=3s
Whoa that is amazing. For the average person who can’t afford a real Curta (or a replica), there is a great poster available breaking down how it works: http://www.vcalc.net/cu.htm
Did Adam change his Leatherman ?
Thank you! Didn’t remember that one. Awesome to see it work, so.. as read on a actual funny (amazing) Youtube comment; what happens if you divide by 0? 🙂
Correction Sean: second time Tested featured a Curta.
Check around 6:30 in this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I0rX7t1J0Q

I was fascinated how the device functions. This video does a good job of laying it out:

Just simply amazing and beautiful.
I have spent hours watching YouTube videos of electro mechanical calculators freaking out when dividing by zero 😉
Ghehe, I sometimes have such nerdy moments as well, just…can’t…help…it.
I do some math at the end of my assembly video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh2Z11miQ0w
Thank you Marcus. I indeed didn’t notice that, really impressive!
