How to Make a Laser-Cut Prop Stand!

Inspired by a Blade Runner blaster stand that came with a kit, Bill Doran walks us through the simple process of designing and laser-cutting an acrylic stand for your hand props. In this case, a lightsaber! We take our quick design to our shop’s Universal Laser Systems laser cutter and piece together a stand in less than 10 minutes.

  1. Very cool! I’m glad my blaster stand provided the inspiration for your Light Saber stand.

One thing you can also take into account for more precise work is the width, or kerf, of the laser cut. Typically the width of the laser cut is around .0075″ (the beam is actually conical so the deeper the cut the wider the kerf). Since the laser cuts on the center of the vector line, the part will be .00375″ smaller all the way around. Conversely, if you were cutting a hole the diameter of the finished cut would be .0075″ larger than the vector artwork. Not a lot, and not often a concern, but in the case of parts that slot together like the stand offsetting the artwork outwards by 1/2 the beam width can make the parts fit together with less wiggle.
