Custom Model Paint Racks for the Tested Workshop!

Sean’s latest project with our Universal Laser Systems laser cutter is an improvement to our workshop’s model paint storage. Sean designs a stackable storage system that can work with different sized bottles, properly labeled. We assemble one of these storage racks and show off the design details.

  1. Will you posting the design files? I’d love to try doing something similar, albeit sans the laser cutter that I sadly lack the funds for. If you guys still have that Glowforge kicking around, I’d happily take it off your hands for you. 😉

  2. Sean hid really well that he burnt his hand on the hot glue gun. That must have hurt, but a quick rub of the hand and the show continues. Impressive.

    And a great project

  3. I too would really appreciate it if you post the files. Great work, so timely as my wife asked me to make something similar to keep our glue bottles from being on their sides and jamming the tops.

  4. Sean – There are a bunch of different solvent adhesives for acrylic, styrene and other plastics and as you have noticed, not all are created equal, or more accurately, different solvents work better on different plastics. IPS makes some of the most commonly available “industrial” plastic solvents. Weld-On 3 and 4 are their water-thin solvents for acrylic. #3 is very fast setting, #4 is moderate setting, but #4 IMHO doesn’t bond anywhere near as well as #3. The catch is that Weld-On 3 is not available in some areas like Los Angeles due to South Coast Air Quality Management District regulations. So you are stuck with #4, unless you bring some in from another region. But I would never advice doing that… it’s “wrong”.

Weld-On 3 and 4 work on styrene as well as ABS and some other plastics. It is a little aggressive with these softer plastics so use care.

Hobby stores caring solvent cement designed for use on styrene that is not as aggressive as the weld-on products. Tame makes some really nice “extra thin” solvent cement but, like most things packaged for the hobby industry, it’s really pricey. “Hobby” styrene solvent cements usually aren’t strong enough to work with acrylic, ABS and other materials.

I’ve pretty much settled down to just using Weld-On 3 (Oops, did I say 3? I meant 4!) for acrylics and styrene plastics.
